Title: Weird Beautiful fretless paddle bass
Post by: Basvarken on December 01, 2011, 12:52:18 PM
The Ebay auction just ended a few minutes ago.
I've been watching this bass for a week, hoping that nobody would see it ;)

But in the dying seconds the bidding got beserk, so I backed off

But wow, what an intriguing bass!

That is pretty cool. It has a definite '50s appliance feel to it.

Why does it need a case, when it already has a carry handle built in? LOL

+1 on looking cool though

My first thought was Atlansia (http://www.atlansia.jp/).

With that grip, my first thought was Ibanez Jem prototype.  ;)

Too bad you didn't get it, it would be a great conversation piece no matter how it plays. But I would have dropped out of that bidding war too.

Can you fill in spare fuel with it? Sure looks the part. But I do like its retro-Jetsons esthetics.

I don't know why, but it reminds me of my truck, except you could have bought two of my trucks for what it went for. So in conclusion, it's not a truck, but if it were, it would be less expensive.

It's almost like an upright bass. Does it have an endpin?

Given the balance (or lack thereof) it would have, that would probably be the best way to play it.

Yeah, one that steams your floors too and has a rechargable lithium battery ;D

What did the description say about it in the auction? Did it mention what brand it was or any other interesting info about it so we can try to figure what they heck it is or when or where it was made?

The description in the auction said; STEINBERGER,FRAMUS,HOPF,HOYER,KLIRA.
But i doubt there is a relation to any of that brands. As the bass was located in Poland i did a search for Polish built guitars.
The tuners seem to be like some found on DEFIL basses (scroll down, fig.16);

I tried a reverse image search in Google but it turned up wrestlers and cars. . . really

Looks could be deceiving, especially if it came from behind the iron curtain.

In the pics it looks well made.
Only the action is a bit high? Almost double bass like...

Still talking about the bass from eBay? My first guess was that it could be an electric upright. Those early Framus Triumphs had pickups like a rooftop. Those are more rounded, but still upright-like.

I was browsing through the pictures on the fetish guitar site, but without any results.

I doubt it's an upright with the location of the strap buttons. Possible, though. That fingerboard does look like it has quite a radius.

The strap buttons could have been mounted later in it's life?

I thought that too but I really did come up with wrestlers and cars on a reverse image search.
I'm agreeing with Dave but yet sort of think it's a one off sort of bass.
I really am tempted to try one and send it to Carlo for refinement  ;D

The one thing I noticed is that whoever built it, used flat head Philips screws, where most commercial guitars use oval head screws.

The fingerboard looks pretty obviously like Ebony but the neck itself looks like some kind of Oak. Cool find Rob.
