The local store has two count 'em two new 4003s ! One Jetglo the other Mapleglo. They are both super nice basses love the edge to edge inlays and the walnut wings on the headstock, and the slimmer profile neck. I am going to put a deposit on the mapleglo ;D

That's because we're Dutch, Bert. Those strange English talking people just use an 's' if they mean more than one. CDs, 493s, TVs, ...
Only if things are possesive they say 'Uwe's Köllektiön' or the 4003's pickguard.

Whey did they invent the 4001s and the 4003s then?

I prefer to capitalize the "S" in the case of those models, like the 4003S/8. According to the RickResource website (http://www.rickresource.com/main/) (click on articles, then bass, then scroll to the bottom for the various 4000 models), they were available in the '60s, then reintroduced in 1980 (the 4001S and then later the 4003S varieties). But I can't attest to the accuracy of the information on that site.

I guess I used the wrong words. I meant: why didnt they name them differently if an s is such an ambigious letter. (And now I think of it I dont even want to know. I like s models. period.)

No, you used the right words - I read "why" as "when" for some reason! I'm sorry!
I think the "S" is supposed to stand for "special," and yet it looks more like a "budget" version since it doesn't have binding or shark inlays or Rick-o-Sound. In hindsight, those aren't a bad thing, since many people prefer the contoured body minus binding, but it still doesn't make sense...

Crap I stopped by on my way home from work and the Mapleglo was gone :sad: snooze ya loose I guess. I'll get the first call when another mapleglo comes in but dam that could be a while. Maybe i should just buy the Jetglo

Yes I think the lack of an apostrophe threw you guys I'm no English major but 2 or more 4003's should be written like I just wrote it.
Incidentally how much thinner is the neck? Is it also a little less wide? I love the 70's 4001 necks, I'm talking the one's made a little later. This place reminds me of the old Forum when I first joined.

The Smith book mentions "standard" which does make more sense to me. There's also a beatifull picture of a experimental 4001S in it with a 4005 pickguard and pickup-layout I just noticed. Would be a nice idea for a 4004 mod I think.

Great a bunch of English majors. Back to basses, the neck is a slim profile compared to earlier the 4003 but I don't think they are quite as thin as some 70's 4001 , having said that I like the profile a lot.

For a while there when they were even further behind, IIRC they were running two CNC machines and one of them still had the thicker neck profile. I wonder if that's over and done with by now.
At least now you can actually find a few of them in stock.

As I understand it the thicker neck profile is a thing of the past but I don't know for sure, maybe JH will chime in ?

We will not know for sure it's a thing of the past until we see the first posts complaining that "they don't make them like they used to". ;)

I played a 2008 Rick and its a lot thinner than my '99 was (is). It is wider than my '73, '75, '79 and my '86 Ricks are though. I had the feeling it is a little thicker than my '06 4001c64 and just as wide but I couldnt compare them side by side so I'm not totally sure.

Ok I went back for the black one, they went to get the case and guess what ? It turned out to be a unopened box with another Jet glow inside ! I checked both basses out and they felt almost identical but the one from the unopened box had nicer inlays so being virgin and having nicer inlays I took that one. Had to put it on layaway >:( but I should have it in my hands soon ! God I love basses.

Wait...they had a Mapleglo and a Jetglo when you first went by. You mean they had a third bass they didn't know about?

Look at you! Another RIC. Will you play it out once you get it? I play my midnight blue out once in awhile. It sounds great.

I have always loved Rics ! Paul then Roger Glover both made quite a impression on me. I had a 2000 mapleglo with the beefy neck that I loved a lot ! I had to sell it off a while back so the black one will replace it. Still so much bass for so little $. The workmanship is top notch. It's funny I love having Rics in my collection but I don't use then all that often. I am anxious to use this one with my Seymour Duncan pickup booster pedal. Maybe we will pick up a few Deep Purple tunes ;D

I feel the same way Scott. I take my midnight blue 4003 to about every other gig and I always love the way it sounds. The neck is better than the older one I had from about 2004 or so, but I find the TB necks a little btter for me. Still, it's a great bass.

no reason to do anything with the bridge, Scott. I like your mod quite a bit. I did add a pickup cover 'cause I didn't like catching my fingers on the sharp inside edge of the surround. it's a great playing bass, I always get good comments about it's tone and looks.

it's a very nice job and tastefully done. looks like it done at the factory!

I think those little raised bits were the hardest thing for me to get used to when I bought my first one. I like to palm mute sometimes and they make it almost impossible to get the right amount of sustain with your palm.

I'm mostly a pick player and palm mute quite a bit and I found those channels over the mute made it hard to play............................ so I removed them. ;D

I know a few other guys who have done that. I don't use a pick very often but have been using my thumb with a Thunderbird while palm muting, it gives it almost an upright-like sound, you can really control the amount of sustain like that, can't do that on a Ric although their mute sounds pretty good too.
