Soccer is the underdog sport of the black masses (the national soccer team only has one white player) and rugby still is - from Apartheid days, when South Africa would force visiting New Zealand national teams to play without their Maori players and the white Kiwis shamefully obliged
- the sport of the whites. SA's current national rugby team has not a single black player, only a black trainer hired a few years ago, explicitly to "increase the racial mix".
I certainly hope the World Cup goes well in SA and helps the country heal some more. I admire how that country did not see the end of Apartheid in bloodshed - they should build a Mandela statue on every street corner -, but they still have a long way to go, white unemployment is 4%, black unemployment 40%, white wealth has risen in the last ten years by 70%, black wealth by only half of that. Now the fact that compared to other African countries black wealth has risen at all when it is falling almost everywhere else is a good thing, but the fact that the gap continues to widen even after the fall of Apartheid is not.
