We played a gig on saturday and one of the bands was 2 dads and their kids. The bass player had a victory which shes says is better than any other bass-well i cant fault her there,it sounded great, but how she wears that i dont know because its Heavy!
-
brave little girl!
-
Shaming for all those among us who complain about back pains when they play their Victory basses!
-
In some ways, your body gets smarter as it gets older. I'll leave the basses over 9 pounds to the younger, more vigorous and foolish. 8)
-
It looks pleasantly worn and scuffed. The bass, not the girl.
Hell, John Wetton still troops out his Victory! (Edit. RIP, John).
-
That does it. One of my Victorys is getting gigged soon. Hell, they are no heavier than my Telecaster Basses!
-

I know grown men who complain about the weight [wink, wink]!

It is a very under-rated bass (and looks best when hung with the neck diagonally up like that as well FYI). I prefer it to just about any P I have ever played (I have not played super vintage ones) in both sound and feel.
-
Are they heavier than RD's...?
-
Close call; I'd have to go check (I have both).
-
Mine's slight lighter than most, as you prob know... :vader:
-
It's as much about the balance as it is about the weight. In some cases even more.
-
Absolutely Dave. My Les Paul Bass is rather heavy, but it had never bothered me because it balances perfectly.
-
Victories are perfectly ergonomic and sit stable on your gut, but they are certainly one huge fat hunk of maple.

My RDs are heavier than my Victorys. Here's a bathroom scale weigh in for my current Gibson Basses.
1974 Ripper- with cover- 4.2K 9.25 lbs
G3 70s Tribute- 4.2K 9.25 lbs
2006 Les Paul Double Cut- 4.1K 9.0 lbs
Memphis ES 335 Bass- 4.3K 9.5 lbs
RD Standard- 5.4K 11.9 lbs
RD Artist- 5.4K 11.9 lbs
Victory Standard 5.0K 11 lbs
Victory Artist 5.3K 11.7 lbs
TBird- 2008 4.2K 9.25 lbs

I should re-weigh mine...

I was expecting the Victory to, uhum, lead (pun intended!) the field because of the additional steel rods in its neck. It sure feels heavier than an RD though they are no doubt heavy basses too.

Not by much tho.... also how the hell is a Vic Artist heavier than a Standard?

Yes, counter intuitive. So I weighed them again. Same result correct to 1 decimal point.
The routs may not be much different in area when you have a look at the pics below and the Artist has a bridge pickup in that rout and some additional electronics.
Maybe different wood densities between my two basses as well?

Huh; figured the artist route would be much bigger for the active electronics.
-
Victory electronics take up much less space than the RD board. Though they have a Moog background too, they did away with all the compression/enhancer clutter. For the time actually surprisingly small and tidy.

That could very well be. With a large body, there can easily be a difference of 1 lb. between two bodies of the same species.
-
My Victory standard is just hair heavier than my next heaviest bass, the '80 Ripper (which is a pound heavier than my '73 Ripper). Third heaviest is my '75 P-bass.
-
None of my basses are as heavy as my '91 LP Studio. It's very well balanced too, though I probably wouldn't want to play a four hour gig with it.
-
Les Pauls sit well. That small, but heavy body anchors them effectively.
