Gibson Basses / Re: Gibson Victory question

Victory is back from the shop! After quite a few losses, it's a Victory once again. Pots: replaced. Pickup switch: replaced. Pickup: repaired. Strings: replaced. Chrome knobs: replaced with proper Gibson knobs. Verdict: The Victory is an awesome bass!

I always enjoy these random T-bird photos behind the killer scenery of a Subaru!

Entwistle sounds interesting on any bass. And some people sound boring on any bass. I'm still Uwe Hornung when I play a P Bass, I'm probably even a bit more agressive in my playing (or it comes out that way) than if I play a TBird (which has kind of a soothing influence on me). But the longer I play, the more I realize that gear - as long as it works and has a minimum quality - has only a miniscule part to do with how you sound and what you project.
Let's not end up like guitarists, those sorry creatures that believe their identity is determined by "their" guitar and "their" amp. The look of dread you see on guitarists' faces when you propose to them "well, you might play over someone else's amp, you know ..." always cracks me up. If you are not able to get something that appoximates your sound (enough to fool 90% of the world population) over a run-of-the-mill bass and amp, you should seek counseling.
Yes, I'm a nerdy Gibson bass collector, but I would hate to think that they define my playing. I can have as much fun on a Yamaha or Ibanez.
Uwe

This past weekend I went to Richmond to see Southern Culture On The Skids play for the millionth time. Rick Miller usually plays one of two or three guitars: an old Danelectro or a metalflake Gretsch. And you know, no matter which he's playing it sounds like RICK MILLER. To me, that is amazing and says volumes about his ability as a musician.

Walked into the Stone Pony just in time to catch the support band's last song -  and snap this pic. Custom job?

That looks great; and HUGE, unless he's just a little guy playing it.

and what's with the glove?

His Michael Jackson tribute, maybe?  ;D

My chiropractor fell off a roof and broke his wrist. No kidding. He's out of business now and can provide no relief from this bass nonsense.

Thanks for the great info, Uwe! The bass has been stored in an unheated garage for sometime, so odds are shimming will be a necessity. How thick a shim would need to be?
The bass, uh, sure does have some heft to it... Playing the Ripper has drilled home that I need to start lifting weights again, so that will be a help with the Victory as well!

Any idea how many Victories Gibson produced in those few years?

Well, it happened! A good friend bribed me into helping put his cafe'd out Honda CB750 back together by giving me his Victory Standard. It's a red one with an original case and in pretty decent shape. I'm going to have it checked out a shop to see what it needs; hopefully the pickup is okay. I'm looking forward to trying it out once it gets sorted. Whoo hoo!

Gibson Basses / Les Paul Special
« on: July 16, 2009, 05:43:08 AM »
Last Friday I went to see The Olympic Ass-kicking Team at Sadlacks, a small outdoor joint which has been around for decades. The bass player, Jack Cornell, played most of the gig with a P-bass, but towards the end switched to a Gibson Les Paul Special bass. He said it was a one year only model (1990, I think?) as Gibson "screwed it up by adding binding and all that other junk", the next year. It SOUNDED fantastic! What does everyone think of them? I've heard they are prone to neck warping, but that could have been in reference to later ones.

Badger posted this picture elsewhere so I doubt he'd mind me doing the same.

Ha good time was had by all.  Hopefully, Denis will soon get over his hangover and post a few pics...

Been over the hangover, but I have something like 275 photos to go through. I will post soon but you did get some of the cooler basses in there. I did get one photo of a Thunderbird  waiting patiently all by itself on the mainstage.

The Stranglers did a cool song in which they mentioned Trotsky: I think it was called "No More Heroes".
