I love the fact that a primitive breed was able to exist on its own for so long.  And that while such a rare and ancient strain, they still go batty in the park and take a dump.  That stuff just intrigues me though, kind of the same way I love finding out about people who have heritage/ancient apple varieties still growing in odd places.  My grandmother had an ancient Roxbury Russet tree in her yard in Roxbury, MA of all places.

You don't have to go so far to find ancient strains of dogs.  Our Johnny Reb friends have been chasing these things away for a few hundred years now.

Fender Basses / Re: What Jazz to buy ?

Duuuuuude!  JPJ's Jazz didn't have strings going through the body!

I saw the new ones this past weekend - they got the P and J in at the local GC.  The tort guards really do give them a classic look.  They seem to have a noticeably flatter radius on the board compared to a RI.  I hope to mess around with one of them in the near future.  But they do capture the vintage vibe nicely.  I didn't bother to check the price but that seems like a pretty good deal.

Not to throw out a cliche, but the sky is the limit.  I guess how I would do it depends on me, so how do you like to mess around?  If tone is kind of important you could use a stack pot, like a 62 RI Jazz, for one control.  It could hold the master tone for all three pups.  I would incorporate push-pull pots for any tone mod that I would not use all the time - so for your humbucker (is it a mudbucker or something else like a DiMarzio?) you could have the push/pull mod the wiring from series to parrallel, and you can do that to the P pup as well.  I don't know how hard it is to get those S-1 switches from Fender, but that is a neat trick to do the same thing.  You could have a push/pull pot to bypass the tone as well.  I personally don't like mini toggles, so if I can replace one volume or tone pot with a push pull I do that.  In theory you could have all three pups run in series, or anything else you can think of.  I try to limit myself to Sleeper mods, to use a hot rod term.

My personal concept is if you don't like a pup, you can turn it down, so I would use push pulls to alter wiring.

I almost installed a mudbucker in an old Fender, and didn't have the heart to cob it up.  There was a thread here about other people who have done it besides Billy Sheehan, and it was not unknown in the 60s. I would do it to an aftermarket body or copy.

He has always owned up to the EB1 which is on the LZIII wheelie thing - and he has stated in interviews that he did use it, and loved its old school tone.  He recorded with it on tracks on the first 3 or 4 lps for certain.  That being said, the majority of the early tracks were the Jazz with flats and often played with a pick (Herco - for completists).

He adopted Alembics around Presence, to the detriment of the band's sound in my humble opinion.

But Hip Hop is a good reason.

For true JPJ vibe - in the pre-Presence era - you have really 3 choices: A 60s MIM Jazz, the pricey 64 Ri, or a Bass V.  He really did not use a stack knob, but you could in theory buy a 62 ri and swap the control plate for the later version.  At any rate, the MIM is a great bass, but does need a competent set up job.  All the mim come with bad action and sometimes bad intonation and fret finish.  Not so big a deal really considering the savings.  The 64 RI is steep for essentially a 62ri with the later plate and a bit more attention.  He did use the Bass V regularly in the early 70s monster touring phase.  For completists only.  I don't recall him using a P except for odd photos - not part of the early vibe.

That has a feedback block, no?  If so, you could stud anchor a Schaller 401, and do it up long scale.  Or a Kahler non-whammy.  Maybe even go Epi-traditional and mount 4 individual pieces on an elegant slant.  Or the new hipshot.  So many choices....

About the only thing I wouldn't do is an arch top bridge and tailpiece, like on that fancy pants ES-175 bass they did.

Those are great pics!  I am not sure what type it is, although we have plenty of hawks here in MN.  I had one divebomb down on a squirrel a few years ago while I was having a cup of joe on the back porch.  He dropped down on the neighbor's ancient metal shed to eat it, and the sound of a squirrel getting eaten alive while the talons clanged on the metal roof was really fascinating and disturbing at the same time - not as bad as Motley Crue, but close.  The hawks look really cool when they open their wings, as they are huge and have that checker pattern.

I grabbed this shot of the tree across the street two years ago.  Not the best shot, but worth sharing I think.  The thing to imagine is that these bald eagles are both the size of a cocker spaniel.  Makes you want to hide the kids.

I really like the binding on that.  I hope your neck gets the full treatment to match it up.

I had an old Peter Tork Gretsch, and the pups in that - which were Supertrons - sounded wonderful.  Probably the one I liked most for recording.  I know people love Hagstrom/Dark Stars, but I preferred it.  I would imagine the TV Jones pups are simillar sounding.

I thought of TV Jones for a future Coronado experiment.  I would love to try your Sheraton, but I know I can't handle a set neck.  A man's got to know his limitations.

As always, Good Luck.

Those only came with two pickups, no?  Might add a couple of bucks.  That would be fantastic, though.

How about GibsonKaiser?  The position would require a sword and a piked helmet.

Fleetwood Mac on the Eddie Boyd Blue Thumb lp.  The Yardbirds on the Philamore Lincoln lp.  McVie and Fleetwood on Werewolves of London.  The Beach Boys backing up Elton John and Chicago on vocals, and Flo and Eddie vocals all over things.  George Harrison on Basketball Jones with Cheech and Chong.  There's a bunch I like.

Best Buy hasn't gotten around to having them in every store, but they have opened a musical instrument boutique type thing in a lot of their bigger stores.  They intend over the next few years to become a PLAYA in the instrument retail world, in kind of the way they absorbed the Magnolia high-end electronics chain.  The belief is they are already so much bigger than all the existing chains, that they can fill a sales void in the way that they did in the CD retail market.  Or it could implode on them, which would not be a big deal to them in the long run.  But so far it seems to be working out pretty well, and they don't have a problem getting people who know instruments as far as sales and service and who appreciate the pay and benefits from Best Buy vs people like GC.
