Title: "50th Anniversary" Cataldo G8R 41
Post by: dadagoboi on July 05, 2013, 09:30:10 AM
Well, 50th Cataldo anyways. ;D

I've had this nice mahogany blank for a couple of years, it was originally meant for a JAEbird
(http://i976.photobucket.com/albums/ae241/cata1d0/0050/P1030004-001_zpsb757888f.jpg) (http://s976.photobucket.com/user/cata1d0/media/0050/P1030004-001_zpsb757888f.jpg.html)

I didn't want it to end up painted a solid color like this korina body (ended up Fiesta Red) so I kept putting it aside when orders came in.

Matt B requested a G8R 41 4 string in cherry and wanted something special.  I was surprised to find the G8R body fit the same blank.  It seemed appropriate for bass #0050.   Here's the rough body and neck with bridge and tail located:

Heavy contouring to allow easy upper fret access

Cherry Baybee, actually red Ultra penetrating stain.

Thanks, Scott.  I'm gonna shrink the P/G on this one a little.

I'll restrain myself and say nothing.

Use of this phrasing on this forum constitutes waving a red flag at a bull.

2 coats sealer, 1 lacquer.  No grain filler.

Three more clear coats, block sanding in between coats.  Pickguard is from my G8R 81 Eighter. Final one will be smaller.

I like the larger size PG. It really makes for a nice contrast and breaks up the width of the silhouette. Making it look more "Thunderbirdy" without narrowing down the body waist and bridges the gap between Reverse and Non-Reverse T-birds.

Thanks, guys!  Just slightly smaller, the guard is crowding the scallops at the edges of the horns, especially the lower. I'm going to start with 1/8" shrink all the way around.

Slimmed down pattern.

Doesn't take much to make a difference.

Dummy pickup gets replaced with a Model "S" ThunderBucker tomorrow.  Pickguard ended up quite a bit smaller due to the size of the Lexan blank but I like it, doesn't overpower everything else.  Double stick tape holds it in place.

Playing area of the back of neck is unfinished.  Next G8R will have same scalloping on front of body as on back.

Alright, got in the first show, and I am in the timeframe for the "honeymoon" period, but

I THINK THIS IS THE BEST BASS I'VE EVER PUT MY GIRLY LITTLE HANDS ON!!!!!!!!!!!

Comfy to play, perfectly growly, gorgeous to look at, and great balance.  Seriously, can't say enough good. Got lots of compliments on both the looks and the sound.  Everybody should buy 3 or 4 basses from Carlo, right now!
