Gibson Basses / Re: 3-Point Abuse
« on: November 07, 2017, 12:58:07 PM »
Yeah, I've seen some ultra-radius'd 3 pointers on "lawsuit"-era Japanese stuff before. I guess they were made of soft metal, which also explains why I've seen them with chunks missing.

I wonder if they ordered them to the wrong specs then bent each and every one in the factory?

Here is a humorous take on Scottish sectarianism:

I might be the only person here who understands the characters.... let me know!

Tim Hortons devised a flying wing? Those Canadians are smarter than I thought!

Nonsense. 32" already robs you of a taut and dominant E string sound, yet doesn't compensate with an especially bendable and full-sounding D and G. Worst of both worlds. A strings are ok irrespective of scale, different, but all ok.

Come on man, its not the '70s any more. Strings are built to all sorts of different specs now, and you can get a balanced set for a 32'' instrument.

Cool bass, but how does one pronounce Maruszczyck? That guy must lose a bit of Internet traffic simply because of that spelling.

Mah-roosh-chick?

Andy Scott's hair is a supergroup in its own right.

That is an awesome setlist! I didn't realise they were plundering their '70s output so rigorously. Who is playing bass, and is their tone as rich as John Wetton's?

Those are big single coils with a coil per pole peace. They are based on an old Framus design and I love those pickups.

Is that the chrome double bass pickup design that mounted right down at the end of the fretboard and was shaped to match? Any chance of a Bi-Sonic reissue from Warwick/Hagstrom?

Lying about diesel engines, invading The Netherlands, making David Hasselhoff big, the Audi A2, the Höfner control panel (both controls set to ON is both pickups OFF), Heino and the makers of the smallest, thinnest book ever (The Big Book Of German Humour).

Germans....

And those toilets that are designed so that you can inspect your stool in intense detail. Presumably all Germans carry around a small pocketbook and note down the key attributes of their morning dump. Perverts.

What is this?

I'm pretty sure St. Vincent doesn't use a bassist live? I saw a bunch of live videos of her a while ago, but nothing recently... this doesn't bode well.

I tried one of her signature guitars a while back, and it was pretty cool. I don't remember much about it, beyond the neck being entirely made of rosewood and only given a minimal oil finish. I wish I could remember more... the wee minibuckers seemed like an unusual choice.

Aren't those big chrome suckers single coils?

I believe they are, and quite bright sounding at that:

I see they do an "EB-0" too....

Apparently those MEC humbuckers/singlecoils (??) are nothing like mudbuckers beyond the looks.

Look smaller in the picture than I would have expected. The player in the video must not be very big.

I was surprised by this as well. I suppose he could be a diminutive dude, plus he's playing bass in a very formal manner. He's not moving around, and he's wearing a suit, and I think the formalness makes the bass look bigger?

John Paul Jones has a similar ability to make a Jazz bass look either massive or relatively small, if you leaf through photos of Zeppelin from the '70s. Sometimes he's like Nina's bassist, whereby he's just the guy standing behind the bass and making the notes happen. Other times he's a bit more into it and the bass fits him more naturally.

I've been to his studio and ranch and played those basses!

Ever so slightly jealous over here! I follow him on Instagram and he seems to be a very nice down-to-earth dude.

I think the bass might be a Lafayette bass, like this one:

The one I've posted here is missing a knob and the bridge cover.

This is a more complete example:

Scott Reeder plays lefty on basses string righty. He played Rickenbackers, and later Ibanez ATK basses during his stint in Kyuss. More recently he's moved over to Warwick basses. I understand he pretty much taught himself bass, out in the desert, and picked up a righty bass and flipped it over.
