The Outpost Cafe / Star Trek -- Happy in Paraguay

Saw this today and nearly spit coffee all over my laptop.  There is some foul language, but it's worth it.

Gibson Basses / Epiphone LP Bass "The Vinnie"

I'm bidding on this right now.  I actually like the way it looks, but that only influences the impulse to buy so much.  Does anyone here have any insights into the sound?  Google hasn't been able to provide much info except an old review from Bass Player magazine.

The Outpost Cafe / New Board?
« on: November 15, 2008, 12:30:23 AM »
I've been noticing a lot lately, some folks are shoehorning their guitar questions and announcements into the bass sections.  Perhaps a, "All Things Six Strings," board would help.  I just mean, in the end we're all artists first, and bassists second, so sometimes there's something guitard related that needs to be asked or stated.

Just an idea.

Gibson Basses / The JCS Blues
« on: August 10, 2008, 06:21:16 AM »
So last Saturday I picked up (impulse buy, I should've saved my money) a brand new, gold top, JCS.  And I love it.  Played the crap out of it in the store when they pulled it out of the box.  The frets buzzed a tiny bit, but I figured I could work with that.

And I did.  When I got it home, I tweaked with the bridge just a little bit, and pa-POW!  No more buzz.  Even when I really beat on it with a pick.  Except, what's that 9th fret on the G string buzzing all about?
For some strange reason the 9th fret, just on the G string portion, is set lower than the rest of the frets, resulting in a terrible buzz.

Ugh, so Monday morning it goes back to the store.  They have another one so I'm going to get to swap mine out for that one (10 day return policy) and see where to go from there.  It's a shame too, because I really feel like I've bonded with this one.

Bass Amps & Effects / Marshall MB Series
« on: June 22, 2008, 10:16:56 AM »
I've long wanted a small 30 or so watt practice amp simply for my bedroom, but all the really good ones were, in my mind and wallet, a little too pricey for such an application.  For a long time (and actually still) I was looking at these little Roland things with four 4" speakers and an integrated drum loop thingy.

That all ended last weekend when I went to the local music store, mainly to BS with a buddy and his coworkers, and play all the basses and guitars I can't afford, when I stumbled upon the Marshall MB30.  It was a basic little Vietnamese hussy, that whispered softly to me with its cheap plastic knobs and likewise plastic logo.  So plugged in an Ibanez ATK300 (another new infatuation of mine) and was blown away.  It was deep, and gritty.  It sounded like war in a little package.  I compared it to the Fenders and the Genz Benz and the Hartkes and all that, they all sounded super clean, and stringy, and 2 - 3 times as expensive.  But this little beast chugs and thumps, and even has a "modern" channel if you want the super slick and clean tone (albeit not as slick and clean as the Hartkes and such).

Well, $200 US later it came home with me.  It took a little tweaking around to find that same grit it had with the Ibanez, but I got it dialed in, and I love the damn thing.  I am actually planning on getting the 450 watt head for my main rig, and relegate the Ampeg to emergency back up duties.  Anyone have any experience with the larger head version?  The whole series is new, so reviews on the interwebs are few and far between (the only one I found on Harmony-Central was someone else asking about the thing).

Fender Basses / Jaguar Bass

Looks like the other two colors (Alpine White and Sunburst) are available in the states now.  I might need me a white one.

The Outpost Cafe / Indiana Jones

I liked the new one.  I heard some grumbling from some people on the way out about the ending.  But I thought it took a few guts, but in the end was worth it.

Though it is a little sad to see one's childhood heroes getting so old.

It's a guilty pleasure, but I check out Hot Chicks with Douchebags almost daily.  I think I am both disgusted, and at the same time entranced that some people actually make ad money off of websites like this one.

Just thought I pass it along, as I find it pretty funny from time to time.  I guess to make it a discussion I should ask, what altogether useless websites do you frequent?

Other Bass Brands / Spector Rebop 4 DLX

I played a used one at GC yesterday.  OMG, I don't think I've ever played a bass that I would actually describe as, "buttery," before.  Are the cheaper Asian counterparts to this delicious Czech monster any good?

Gibson Basses / Greco Birds...
« on: February 16, 2008, 01:07:24 PM »
I'm putting a fair amount of wear and tear on my Thunderbird, and since I cracked the headstock to my Heritage bass, my only other back up bass is a terrible Aria that was an impulse buy a few years ago (it's not a bad bass, I just don't care for it, it doesn't enthuse me in any way).

What are the opinions of other posters about Greco Birds?  I remember from the old site TBird1958 had some positive things to say about them, but... well you know.

Would a decent old greco bird be a good beater bass until the BaCHBird comes out, or my broke ass saves enough cash for another real one?
