Two Hamer slammers on Ebay this week, one like this (no case) just went for $130 shipped, the other (black) is about the same price.

I have been so tempted to buy and modify one of those!

Never noticed it before.  Good price. I like Stew Mac but many of their prices are over the top.

A nice wood wax is nice too.

For simplicity, you could stain it, rub on some Danish Oil and it would look pretty nice.

Geez, I was preping a bass for finishing today and found a couple dents in the back.  Guess I should have dragged it around my shop some more and made it a relic job.  Seriously,  I never understood the relic thing, but that's just me.  I've always been attracted to shiny objects!   8)

This is the one I saw advertised as oak...I'm not sure that it really is but the seller seams to think so.  It could also be a the stain effect that gives him that impression.

Well that could be oak.  Or ash.  Hard to say.  It could have had dark stain applied and sanded back, but it still could oak or ash.  If it weighs a ton, it could be oak.  Either way, I think it's cool looking!

I found some information about the guitars in this article. It says the guitars came with DeArmond pickups. If that's correct, it's likely the basses did too.

I read the bass pups where DeArmond.

I love the body and neck.  Hate pickup placement and pick guard.  The price is a joke.  To be honest, knowing what takes to build a bass has jaded my view and opinion of custom shops and builders.  A thing over $2000 is really ridiculous.  I've come to believe. Just because a custom shop or builder can only make so many basses a year doesnt make them inherently more valuable.  It just makes them more scarce.  With so much of the building process machine oriented, the "handmade" bass is rarely carved out of a block of wood by a sculptor.  If it were, rich morons would be the only customers.  Sorry!  I said I was jaded!

They didn't make a lot of Edsels either and it didn't make them more valuable except as an example of poor design and low market interest.

I noticed a couple on reverb advertised as being made out of oak.  Not sure if they really are or if it's just a stain effect that looks like oak but if they are I wonder what that sounds like...

I haven't seen an oak one, but anything is possible.  There's a bunch of guitar versions on Reverb last time I looked.  None were oak IIRC.

Yeah, I think that's high for the condition.  Mine has some minor checking and a few dings.  No big player wear spots or other issues.  Still a cool bass!

Good idea. Can't you clamp it in place that way, then lower the router enough to put in the actual bit while the pin is already clamped? Or isn't there enough room?

That's exactly what I do.  In fact, I can raise or lower the router or the pin as much as needed the way things are set up now.  The nice thing about the PC router base is you can drop the router out from the bottom, change bits and slide it back in with ease.  Takes no time at all and you have several inches of play to let you raise or lower the router/bit.

74
Yeah, that would work too.  The Veritas method is just lining up a 1/2" stud mounted in the router collet with the 1/2" pin.  I like using the 1/2" ID sleeve I got at Lowes.

75
Are the guide pins solid?

Yes, they are solid aluminum and came in 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4" sizes.  They snap right into the receiver for quick insertion or removal.

Oops, I forgot the pointy pin for tracing things.  Pretty cool.
