I have no idea what to say to this....

"With that said, one of the past owners left screw holes on the back of the head.  They have been filled."

Alas!  Major damage!!

"If you are thinking something looks wrong ~ you are right. Sometime along the way, one of the past owners had its ears trimmed.  Its a really nice job."

The phrase in bold is the very definition of an oxymoron. It is beyond not nice, it's a perversion.

Why would anyone want a bass to look like a banjo?
But at least the Gibson has a "theme". This one is getting discussion on another forum.

Let's see; I have a bass with no case, but I have this banjo case. How can I make this work?

I would like to give that EB0 a home but the price is rediculous.

The bridge, harness, pickup, tuners, headstock veneer and fingerboard could be put to good use on an EB0 basketcase? Is $999 too much for these parts?

For a good luthier/woodworker it wouldn't be too hard to bring the body back to the original shape. The only disadvantage would be that the finish would have to be non-transparent.

I think the price is way too steep, but I've seen worse cases of abuse that were restored. Somebody with skills and a decent hunk of mahogany could bring this one back. When you think about it, it's pretty much all there - it's just unfortunate that the hacked portion is so noticeable.

I don't know if it would be worth the effort to rebuild it.  I don't think the parts are worth the asking price.

These early LP Junior Double Cut shaped EB-0 basses are very rare. So I guess after a faithful restore job it would well be worth the $.

Those slab EB-0s are pretty scarce - might be worth it for a luthier to take on.
Check out this '63 Strat that Lark Street Music here in NJ did:

I think it's worth restoring. A skilled restoration craftsman could do it. You'd have to sink some serious money into it if you couldn't do it yourself.

Rob could do it. Scott could do it. We've seen their work.

It would be better to just make a new body. I'd say go for it IF....the neck wasn't busted...

Yeah.. the price does not scare me, but 90% and only 8 transactions...

If he had good feedback, more transactions AND the neck was all good I'd jump into it!

Seller has one negative feedback rating, which has bumped him down to 90% due to the low number of sales. Apparently the contested sale was of a 'Vintage 1960's Marco Polo Dreadnought Electric Acoustic Guitar Made In Japan'. The listing is still viewable, and it looks basically like a hilarious POS shortscale acoustic, very possibly intended for nylon strings, with a Goldfoil pickup added down at the bridge and two Strat knobs for controls. It sold for $41, and the buyer claims it was a case of Bait 'n' Switch.

I have no affiliation with the seller at all, so I don't have a horse in this race. However Ebay does tend to, apparently, swing in the favour of a buyer and not necessarily get instrument sales and the various nuances and ramifications involved in buying gear sight unseen. At the end of the day the seller has a 90% feedback rating because of a single shitty transaction over a $41 instrument. Bid with confidence?

Banjo players shouldn't be let near old Gibson basses.

My buddy and i saw that movie and then planned a 30-mile canoe trip down lake Coeur d'Alene in northern Idaho for that spring. We had a good time and no banjos were heard.

Ah, reminds me of the time my friend went to the store and forgot to lock his car doors with his banjo in the back seat.  Inside, he suddenly realized his error and ran out to the parking lot. He got to his car, opened the back door and sure enough he found.........................................................................

Hmmm..Sweeney Todd pulled the listing.  Just when I was thinking that neck might make the perfect donor for an Explorer project.  I can only assume that means Mrs. Lovett  convinced him to unload her cheap to fund another murder. :o

Looks like an early PRS creation.
Title: Re: I'm speechless.
Post by: nofi on March 04, 2016, 08:31:53 AM
it does look prsish. i don't wonder why people carve up vintage instruments but i do wonder how an accurate value can be determined. imo 4,500 dollars is nuts. 450 would be more like it. of course it could have been' customized' when it was only 2 or 3 years old so no one was wrecking a  vintage bass at the time. :-\
Title: Re: I'm speechless.
Post by: patman on March 04, 2016, 08:59:52 AM
I don't think that last one was a vintage instrument.  The carcass didn't look right and the pickup looks like a model one
Title: Re: I'm speechless.
Post by: nofi on March 04, 2016, 09:03:14 AM
the ad says 1959 or 1960.
Title: Re: I'm speechless.
Post by: Dave W on March 04, 2016, 09:07:36 AM
That is a Model One pickup. The carcass has been carved like a PRS but there are enough similarities to an original 59/60 EB-0 that I think it is. Odd that the seller mentions other less important mods while ignoring the Model One and the carving.

Yeah, the price is nuts. No one who knows anything about the originals would pay anywhere remotely near that. I agree with nofi, $450 is more like it. This one has no vintage vibe.

Post by: the mojo hobo on March 04, 2016, 07:29:32 PM
Seller says the pickup is original but it is obviously a Model One.
