Title: Taking the family to see Cheap Trick tonight!
Post by: godofthunder on September 22, 2012, 07:54:08 AM
CT is at Seneca Niagara Casino tonight and Tom was kind enough to provide tickets and backstage passes :) I'm taking the wife and our daughter along, should be pretty cool as my daughter plays bass as well. I'll have a full report tomorrow.

That should be interesting.  Long ago, I can remember I came so close to seeing them, actually even had the tickets.  But weather and other things prevented me from going.  I've always liked Cheap Trick.

I was lucky enough to be in the Chicago circuit when they were still in the clubs.  I saw them dozens of times at Haymakers, and a few times at Night Gallery (main act played from 2:00 am until 6:00 am).  In a club setting, with 3 sets, they were brutal.  It was non-stop.  I couldn't take more than a set or two, but always felt they would be a great concert act.  Back then, Nielsen NEVER EVER played a lead in three sets of material.  It was all chords and inversions.  It's the reason I have always said how underrated he is as a guitarist.

Here's one of their first videos, shot at Night Gallery during an afternoon, when the club was usually closed.

We had a ball! My daughter really enjoyed it, I think she was pretty impressed :) We spent the night at the casino hotel which in itself was fun, beautiful room on the 18th floor facing the falls, very unlike us we usually stay at the cheapest place we can find!  We got to meet the entire band this time and Tom was very nice especially to my daughter. The band really put on a great show, Tom Used two different Waterstone 12 strings the whole night Through a stack of Orange Amps, while Rick changed guitars all most every song, Rick is a amazing guitarist! Bun E. is still MIA but ricks son Dax does a great job. Of course I am now gassing for a 12er (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/CheapTrickSenecaNiagaraCasino011_zps30c10596.jpg)

Nice! An evening to remember for your daughter!!
Several years ago, I brought my son Viktor - he was just 6 or 7 years old! - to a concert with melodic hard rock band Europe. I was there as a reporter, and as guitarist Kee Marcello, and I knew each other a bit, Viktor got to shake his hand while we did the interwiew. Guess he'll never forget it!

Remember when Rick used to be the odd-looking one in the band?
