Title: G3 sighting
Post by: Dave W on November 29, 2011, 10:38:14 AM
I never heard of Hot Chelle Rae before this morning but their CD release is today and they did a number on the Today show. I picked up the remote to mute it, then I saw that the bassist was playing a G3 so I listened.

WARNING: obnoxiously repetitive light dance music for teenagers with nasal imitation-Billie Joe-type vocals. Don't blame me if you're traumatized.  :)

I know that I don't need to listen any farther when I hear the lyric "...I lost my iPhone..."

Is that today's teen-pop equivalent of "My dog died while I was driving my pickup in the rain after my woman run oft...?"

Guys... I have to play that song at every show, and it makes me ill!  :puke: That and their other one "Tonight Tonight". This year's All American Rejects....

My sympathies. It probably gets a certain type of crowd up and dancing, though.

Damn, I just have to have a scarf like the bass player was wearing!  :puke:

Truly horrible!  Gibson should sue, unless their legal team is too busy.

There's a very short line between (shuddder!) Rebecca Black's Friday and this group's songs. Birds of a feather.

Yes, it's women's pop music. So are Snow Patrol, Coldplay, most of U2 and hundreds of other bands. Songs that end up on personal various artists mix CDs or mp3 collections in the end and in 40 years from now very few people will clamor for a remastered version on whatever media is available then.

They are format, but the song does what it says on the tin. Vocals way too loud for me, but that might be the studio mix (if they played only half-playback, i.e. with live vocals, which I doubt).

But I've seen and heard worse and they seem nice enough and unpretentious as people. I'm not gonna knock anyone with a bass player playing a G-3.

I never ever listen to overt dance music in major keys, I swear!

I bet that bass player is immensely popular with the girls:
The combination of a Hugh Grant lookalike with a Gibson G3 is lethal...

If you want women to be into thee, play a sunburst Gibbie G-3!

The sheer size of the instrument alone commands immediate respect. The name G-3 might trigger some hopes too regarding the similarly named spot. One would think. Who wants to be thought of as a G-1 or, alas!, a Grabber?

You mean the band will crash and burn and Lockheed bribes are somehow behind all this?

Or worse, the distant cousin (Jack) The Ripper...

Back to the band for a minute. They played here last night as part of a multi-band bill. The paper's music critic said they "served up sticky bubblegum pop with a snotty attitude, whiney vocals and catchy if simpleton choruses." I guess that's what sells.  :-\

I'm so happy we didn't have "snotty attitude, whiney vocals and catchy if simpleton choruses" back in the day.

Not nearly snotty enough...

My folks were never upset about rock and roll, except that my mom just couldn't stand Little Richard. "He sings like a woman!"

When I got a little older, I figured it out and assured my mom that there was not likely to ever be a Little Richard Junior.

Whether or not you like Little Richard, his music was genuine. I can't say the same for Hot Chelle Rae.

There would have been an even smarmier "Sir Paul" without him.  Not to mention more silly little love songs on the ebony and ivories.

Is that an EB2 in Little Richard's band?  Off screen to the right at first.

Could be. I know his bassist in that era played an EB (EB-1), wouldn't surprise me if he also had an EB-2.

Are you saying he was a eunuch or just gay?  ??? ??? ??? I never put his high screaming voice down to lack of testosterone.

I meant that he was gay, although I had never heard that term back in the 50s. It wasn't apparent to me from his singing back when I was 8 or 9 years old, but after the first time I saw him interviewed, it was obvious.

I liked Little Richard as well.

Why is it disappointing? It just reflects the writer's biases. Most in my parents' generation were disappointed that The Beatles sold more records than Frank Sinatra or Glenn Miller. And so it goes.

Just mostly shows that people who aim for singles success are sometimes successful. And that's ok. Unless her music and she really matures, then in twenty years from now Rhianna's today CDs will most likely not be played by a lot of people in a consecutive form on whatever media, but you'll hear the occasional song on the radio. Few music junkies will be waiting with bated breath for the rerelease of Madonna's debut (plus studio outtakes and unreleased instrumental tracks!) either. So it's ok for artists like that to have a string of single hits in a comparatively short time. In comparison, a band like Zeppelin - did I mention that I really don't like them that much?  ;) - have an Atlantic (pun not intended, but it is nevertheless quite good, don't you think?) Wall of commercial longevity through their LP ouevre which they will be able to remaster, remix, repackage and rerelease over and over again. Different ways to make money, that's all.

FWIW, I'd double check most of those supposed facts deeper than just Billboard, especially pre-70's album sales from ANY artist. ...that and it's pretty much an open secret that the record industry publishes its own sales figures and has never been completely honest about what most of those numbers actually mean. Sam Clemens and all.

You never know, Rihanna may become an institution or be forgotten. I don't waste time worrying about it. There are at least a hundred artists I'd rather listen to than her (or Hot Chelle Ray) but ya know, I just can't get excited about whether or not they are more successful than someone I like. That's someone else's taste, not mine.

FWIW, the total number of Led Zeppelin, REM and Depeche Mode recordings in my collection: Zero. Same as Rihanna! Another reason the writer's "extremely disappointing facts" don't resonate with me.
