Gibson Basses / Ripper
« on: November 17, 2010, 04:21:57 PM »
A few weeks ago I thought I was buying a 78 Ebony Ripper. Then it all fell through and I went off looking for consolation buys. Then last Thursday it was all back on again, and now here it is.

It's in reasonable nick for its age, missing the bridge cover (is that worth replacing?) and the story is the bridge pup was rebuilt by Kent Armstrong to the original spec. Poles are black, whereas the neck pup's are bare metal. Position 2 is powerful, 1 and 4 are less so but nice, 3 has much less volume and not much in the way of bass. Having had a fairly uneven history with Gibson/Epi basses I'm hoping this one sticks. We'll see - it's kind of a sentimental replacement for the Gibson J50 I had when I was 21, which I finally admitted I could never play properly and sold a few months ago.

It's got D'Addario Power Steels on now. I've got flats of varying types on everything else, is that a bad idea?

They're not common this side of the pond, but one came up - Black precision body with maple neck and the older less ugly headstock. I wanted a cheap bass to muck about with and I've seen so many reports of them being great value.

So, it arrived and the neck is orange, like it had been stained with celebrity fake tan and then varnished. That put me right off to start. Tuned it back to pitch and the D string broke, as I discovered it was solidly wedged in the string tree. Pickups are loud, but very bright, I guess due to cheap 500K pots and a tiny green cap.

The body's ok, at least it is wood and they managed to spray the black pretty well. I've had one other bass I hated straight out of the packing, which was a 1970s Eko Manta. It's not that bad - nothing could be - but I don't think I can be bothered tarting it up.

Don't say "pics or it didn't happen", I wish it didn't.

I suppose they're not all like this.

Anybody know anything about these? Can't see them on the Epi or Gibson web sites.

Gibson Basses / Gibson Seconds
« on: September 13, 2010, 10:48:34 AM »
I was getting close to buying a 78 black Ripper, then I found out it has Second on the headstock - what difference does that make to the value?

Aside from that, I wasn't finding it easy to work out what I should be paying. Anything from 400 GBP to 1200USD, which on my assumption that 1 USD = 1 GBP by the time you've shipped it and paid duty, that's quite a range. In good shape, but missing the bridge cover, what are they going for now?

Useful piece of software for anyone whose caps lock is permanently on, or who can't understand why their posts irritate so many other people.

Might be interesting to run a few of the Outpost German/Dutch/WWII posts through it and see where they come on the emotional scale.  ;D

I hope no one will object to this blatant plug, but I feel like I've maybe hovered around here long enough to get away with it.

My son has lived in the US for 10 years and has been working to establish himself as a photographer, based in New York. He's come up with a slightly crazy idea for a project, which is to travel across the US taking pictures that he calls panoramic portraits and documenting the trip and the people he meets along the way. Problem is funds and he now has the project up on Kickstarter, which is a social networking site that basically puts artists in touch with potential backers. Please take a look and if you feel its something you could help with, he will, as he says, be eternally grateful. If not, that's ok too. And obviously the more people that see this the more chance it has, so please spread the word. Thanks.

Gibson Basses / January brings the snow

I just bought an Arctic White Epi Tbird on eBay. Prices have really dropped, a year ago I was watching them go for GBP350, I paid 100 less than that for this one. But then I see Thomann, the big dealer based in Germany, is knocking out the Pro IV NA for GBP270. Anyway, I prefer passive and I wanted a white one.

Just bought this

1998 Dearmond Starfire. Hasn't arrived yet and I'm not sure how I'll get on with short scale and hollow body, but I've been watching too many Jefferson Airplane clips on Youtube. The seller has also found me a bridge pickup with the gold intact.

Don't know if you've seen this before, but I've just wasted a huge amount of time on it. Supposedly tells you the most popular tracks by artist and genre on American radio.

Great way to pick your band's set lists ...  ??? :o

Guitars Etc. / Gibson J50 - keep or sell?
« on: April 11, 2009, 10:54:15 AM »
I've got a 1973 Gibson J50 acoustic, which in 1973 cost me 150 GBP. Sometime in the 1980s I was told it was worth about 800 GBP, which is pretty much what they sell for on eBay now. A while ago I emailed the Gibson history dept about it and was told a pretty typical story for that era - in the 1970s the shape was changed from the round shouldered traditional J45 look to square shoulders and to cut costs the bracing was reduced. Not, in their opinion, a collectible era.  I very rarely play it and I'm not keeping it for my children, unless the value is likely to take off again. So I'm coming to the conclusion I should sell it and put the money into something that I would play and would maybe have some potential for value in the future. But ... still doubts ... any thoughts on that anyone?
