Title: BaCHbirds taking flight!
Post by: gearHed289 on June 17, 2009, 09:04:10 AM
Now that there are over 1000 posts at the BaCHbird thread, and now that they are making their way into our hot hands, should we start a separate thread with live BaCHbird pics? OK, I'll start...........

 Cool pics Tom!

Do I see a Gibson TRC? Standard T Bird piece?
And did yours have a BaCH logo on the headstock?

Mine's in bits and pieces now, getting a new pup, pots and will have a new PG soon too.

There's a guy on ebay who always seems to have some of those Gibson TRCs available. That's where I got mine.

I put a piece of white electrical tape over the BaCH logo for now. It's barely noticeable.  8)

Looks like you got the early "thick body" Bbird. Nice mods. I was initially planning to add a second pup, but I think I'm good with just the one chromified TB+ and some good pots/jack. I thought you had a pickguard with the bird on it?

I thought you had a pickguard with the bird on it?
Yep, I had. It was screen printed. But the ink didn't stick. I rubbed it off quite easily with my fingers...
I may try it again some day, but for now I'm done...

LOL!!!

Finally...I managed to get a shot that was taken the day after I got mine.  No cryptic messages on the back, so far.  I'm having fun with this bass.  Yes, there is no cord in the bass.  The girl that does our MySpace page came to the load-in for promo shots, and wanted a few of everyone before we started.

I think I'll do that today.  What length screw are you guys using for the back of the neck?  It makes me a little nervous...

Improves balance for sure. I was nervous too, but seem to have done OK with the stock Schaller strap lock screw.

Your body should be about 1 1/4 inch thick plus the thickness of the fingerboard. I use the old leather strap locks( Bill Lawrence I think) so I wouldn't use anything more than 1 1/8". I am not sure how much length gets used up in the strap button of the Dunlop/Schaller type systems. I would put the screw in to the strap button and hold it up to the edge of the body to make sure it won't go through. Hope that helps.

What I ended up doing was using an 8x1 1/4 screw with the washer and button.  I "hit bottom" about 1/16" from tight, so I backed the screw out.  I got another one, and cut it off about 1/8".  That one seems to be working pretty good.

I moved my strap lock to the heel of the neck, added some Gibson knobs and a fresh set of RotoSounds ! I have to get some longer wire to swap the tone control and input jack. All set for Saturdays gig, I will have pics on Sunday ! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/BachNRThunderbird002.jpg)

John gave me the body which had been badly butchered by some "luthier", who then proceeded to paint it the wrong color. I gradually compiled parts to finish it. I believe it is a modified Warmoth.

Mighty Mite Jazz neck (w/custom decal), TB+ pups, Schaller bridge, which was a $$$ compromise, but I like 'em and had one sittin around, Hipshot Ultralights w/D-tuner.....

Looks good Scott!

Hey did you have to dowel the original holes and redrill to fit those tuners?  I'm planning to order a similar set for mine, but when I hold the Bach headstock face-to-face with my 76 it looks like the spacing between tuners is too narrow to fit them as is.

It's pretty tight, but all I had to do was drill the new holes for the vintage tuners, the holes for the smaller stock tuners were completely covered so I didn't even bother filling them. Be aware that the BaCh bushings are a little larger, I used a little masking tape to get the vintage bushings tighter, about one "turn" did it. Once you get them all in, the edges of each tuner will be touching. My " '76 " Orville has a little room between each edge too.

That looks GREAT! One of Scott's pickguards would really complete the transformation.

That's next!

Thanks Guys,

S.

I used the Bach for a large part of the show last night, I am more and more impressed with this bass the more I use it. I ran it through the two Hiwatts with my Seymour Duncan pickup booster pedal set on the 1 setting (humbucking one) Man this thing just kills, The guy who does sound on the inside stage came up and was raving about how great the bass sounded. Please Roman make more !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! pics in a few days, hopefully one past the 12th fret.

Finally got around to test-fitting and installing these.  Went in pretty smooth, just like you said.  On mine, I had to enlarge the holes just a bit to fit the vintage ferrules

I've got an audition for a band tomorrow.  This would be a second band, rather than leaving my current band.  These guys are a little more rock and current, so it could be fun.  The guitarist is someone who I've talked to about doing a project in the past.  I put some Roto RB-40 strings on the BaCHBird, and it sounds a lot meatier now.  I decided to bring it tomorrow.  Aside from just jamming and feeling things out, I get to try:

The Pretender - Foo Fighters
Gunpowder and Lead - Miranda Lambert
Man in the Box - Alice in Chains

We may even try "Celebrity Skin"

The funny thing is, not only am I not a fan of Hole (or Courtney), I'm also not a big Billy Corgan fan.  Just shows that you can get some great songs from some unlikely pairings.  That's a song that just screams "Thunderbird".  With floppy strings, and sloppy playing.  I'm in.

We ran through a bunch of songs.  "Wheel in the Sky", "You Shook Me All Night Long", "Keep on Rocking in the Free World", "Red House" (always ask what key they play...I was in G, they were in B...), and anything that we thought we could all play.  We even did "Smoke on the Water" with no vocals.  The girl singer is pretty good, has a strong high end.  It looks like we're a go, and we start weekly rehearsals.  We plan to be gigging before the end of the year.  We won't be doing any Skynyrd.  I love Leon's playing, but I'll be happy to keep them off the songlist in this band.

"Artistic differences". Way too much to get into on a public forum, but I had to get out from under that umbrella. Moving on to hopefully bigger and better things. My new band is going to have TWO cute girls, so don't worry. One on keys/rhythm guit./bass, one on lead vox. I'll be playing mostly bass, but I'll do some keys here and there. Amy loves playing bass, and it will be good to get her out front some. Checking out a singer Anna and meeting with the manager I'm building this with Wednesday night. Pics......

Gary - sounds good. Hope it turns into some good $$$ for you.

Definitely a cause for concern! But, I know Amy pretty well now, and she's exceptionally level headed, especially for a 25 YO girl. She's actually a bigger bass geek than I am (used to be RicChic at the Vox forum I think). Our first rehearsal, she's like "is that a Hipshot bridge on your Ric?" (yes). Impressive! LOL! And the fact that they're not both lead singers helps. Wish me luck!

Bass players are always the even-keeled, sensible ones...  (not that I'm biased or anything :))

Good luck with the new project

Ya know, you're right. I've been called "the voice of reason" my more than one band mate over the years. And I forgot to mention that her last band was ALL chicks.

Broken hip... ha ha! C'mon, I work hard to stay in shape. I'm ONLY 45, that's still young, right?  :-\  :P  ;D

45 is young - at least from my 47 year old perspective ;D

But, you know you're old when someone tells one of your bandmates that they think it's cool that they're letting one of the members father play in the band :P :P

All I can say is 45 is younger than 50 ! I would feel like such a DOM in a band with those two :-\ (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v102/godofthunder59/2326845380083345702KEjiTE_ph.jpg) I keep telling myself I still look pretty good.......................................from 25 feet away.

Ha ha! Yeah, same here.

I don't think it's gonna happen with that singer Anna, but Amy and I are definitely going to try to put something together. With a chick guitarist.... So that will make 3... Definitely a guy on drums though! Kimi is a great guitarist and strong vocalist. Still gonna have a female front person, so the vocal potential is killer between all of us.

You guys are BAD! I'm a serious artiste and would never consider mixing business with pleasure..... And you can all get out your shovels now. ;D Anyway.... this is such a goofy business. There's so much money to be made in the cover band scene around here. There's another management company trying to put together another all girl thing with Kimi and Amy, and now I'm getting dirty looks from them cause me and Amy have been seen out and about lately. Geez... Oh well, it's actually pretty amusing. I just need to get something going soon cause I LOVE performing!

Now maybe we should get back to pictures of BaCHbirds being played live.  :bored:

Of course the waxing thing sounds nightmarish :o  But a serious artiste will make certain sacrifices.......

Denis,

I that made for me by Paul Chandler and Mike Lull cut the opening for the pick up as it may be in a slightly different position than the original Gibson. here's another pic.

Custom pickguard that I had made for him
New pots
Pickup selector switch
new topnut
Hipshot UltraLite tuners
New jack input
Refinned with Nitro

Those pickups just do not look right on that bass. Kind of ugly actually.

Some basses they look nice on others just do not work.

I agree they don't look right on the LP. Too close, too crammed.

But on the Motorpsychobird I really like the look of those DarkStars. But I think I would have mirrored them by turning the bridge pickup 180 degrees.

I'm too anal, in that I shudder when someone puts one brand pickups on another brand - Darkstars are Guild to me. Might as well put P & J's on there.

Funny how when a famous player does it, people worship it (Tractor bass, Billy Sheehan, Fenderbird). When you or I do it people talk about ruining a bass.

Failed Guild, to be accurate. And both of the famous players who had theirs hotrodded quickly moved on to other basses and pickups.

I think they're ugly, regardless of how many of them you use. I don't like the sound of them either. But I do like the looks of that refin.
