Title: I bought a.................................Peavy T40 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: godofthunder on April 29, 2009, 01:25:52 PM
I bet you didn't see that coming ! When they first came out I bought one for all of $225 brand spanki'n new. I love the pickups ! I blew more speakers with that thing. I sold it in the early 80's and wished I never did. I have been watching ebay for a deal for quite a while............................. seems everyone gets a deal but me. In the past couple of days there have been like 5 black ones with the maple neck (I think these look the best). I got out bid on a couple so before I went to bed last night I tossed a bid of  300.00 one one ( about 50 bucks more than I wanted to spend but whats $50 when you want something ?) Well I woke up this morning and it turns out I won it ! I'll post pics as soon as it is here. Oh my back they make a SVT seem light.

When I was 15 and had the choice between a T-40 and a 74 Jazz bass I chose the Jazz, which I dont regret. But I have always wondered what it would be like to own one of those monsters.

Well you know you made the right choice ! But try a T40 I bet it will surprise you.The later solid color ones were alder, much lighter that the ash variety.

Looks just like the one I owned ! It really blew my mind when it came out. The arched body, new pickups, new bridge design, you could tell Peavey really went to great lengths to make the bass a hit. The only complaint I ever hear is that they are to heavy (they are !) If they had chambered the body a bit I bet they would have had a real hit. Gotta remember though mass was a big deal in 70's bass design, mass = sustain.

Sounds like a job for...

ROUTER-MAN...!

Shouldn't be anything beyond your abilities, or even an experimental "clone" body transplant...

It would be intersting to make a new chambered body with f holes.

Scott you know you need to do an f hole bass to join the club?

It's a right of passage here.

... and being a Gemini... hey, there goes that squirrell...

With the Doc's 4005, and I'm sure I've seen reference to others (still working through from the beginning, sad little OCD that I am), is that a gauntlet that has been laid at your feet...?

Anyway, not "F" holes... a "T'Bird" shaped hole and something complimentary on the top fin... hmmm?

Well it's here, two things there is a small crack in the body near the input jack and the black plastic on the pickups are heavily worn and decaying. On the plus side it plays and sounds great !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not sure what I am going to do for $300 I think I can get a better example, the seller said he would take it back or refund me a portion. I am thinking about what to do. Should I keep it or send it back ?

For goodness sake, Scott... you're a player and a craftsman...!

If she plays well and sounds great, who's gonna see the blemishes in the dark from below stage level... go for a refund and put that towards the refin work, or leave her "as-is", like your NR - is she a "Stinky" or a "Woody"...
Knowotahmean...?

I'm not know for my esthetic sense, mind you...  ;)

and remember, "Rust never sleeps...?"

The seller gave me a partial refund and a i am pleased. Hell it plays and sounds great, and I can't bear to send it off to ebay oblivion. If a nice shinny examples pops up for a deal I'll grab that to.  ;D
Title: T-40 Review
Post by: godofthunder on May 15, 2009, 05:21:17 AM
This bass is exactly how I remember it when I bought one new when they first came out. Very well built by late 70's standards far better in fit and finish compared to a late 70's Fender, it certainly plays better than any 70's Fender I have ever owned or played. I have the action very low not one buzz or rattle. The neck profile is similar to a 70's Jazz but a little more refined and not as beefy with a flatter radius that a Fender, string bending is easy, also the medium jumbo frets are dressed very well.  The bridge is massive and I am sure it in part adds to the sustain of this bass, notes ring forever. I am not sure if I got a alder or ash body on this bass solid color should be alder but it is heavy (the name T-40 reminds me of Soviet tanks, apt it is built like one) I saw a vintage add for one of these and the line read something like "For those who demand more than Precision", great sales line and this bass sure does offer a lot more than a P bass. Even in the late 70's P basses were still dominant over the J and this bass was built to take them both on. The pickups are the heart of this bass  two massive Humbuckers that you can split the coils on and throw in and out of phase, this bass can go from a full throaty mudbucker like roar to the snap of a J and even very Ric like tones both clank and warm. For very little $ you can get your self a nice well built USA vintage bass with tons of tonal options. They are heavy though,  it seems to be their only flaw. That bass looks great - no one will ever see the crack...whereverintheheck it is.  I sure don't see it.

That is one great looking bridge - it has about as much room for intonation as any bridge I've seen.

Red was a stock color once they started painting them. What did they want for it ?

They were busy when I was there and it was hanging where I couldn't get to it to check it out. I didn't see a price on it and didn't want to bother them since I wasn't going to buy it. I think I'm going in there again this weekend cause they had a case that I may try to snag. I'll let you know if I find out the price.

T40s I've played were all heavy yet reasonably well balanced. I would say over 10 lbs. Not as heavy as a Gibson Victory, which is typically 13-14 lb.

For whatever reason, I've always considered my T-40, B-301 A and Magnum II as a group. Maybe because they are all American and have brownish fins!

Maybe because all three are attempts by manufacturers better known for other musical equipment, to enter the bass market. If you had a Martin bass, would it be there too?

Am I preaching to the already converted here  :-[ or did you like me not know the following:

The "tone" controls of the T-40 - each of them - are split. 10-5 does not affect treble (0-5 does), but actually activates the extra coil that makes the two pups (at ten in solely singlecoil mode) to full-fledged humbuckers. If you have the two tone controls at 5, only then the bass works with both pups in humbucking mode.

I had never realized that.  :-\ I had noticed that the tone controls work "weirdly"  ??? (kind of WALish, you never know what is happening, but it always sounds good!), but never figured it out.  :bored: Now the German bass mag Bass Professor had a reverential feature on the T-40  :rimshot: and "explained"  :o the electronics.

You live and learn. And now I know why "reducing treble" on my T-40 made the bass louder and angrier.  ;D I also finally realize where that glistening presence comes from which is quite unlike any other bass: The T-40 is a singlecoil bass unless you adjust the "tone" knobs.

Or was I just stupid?  :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ Please be gentle with me.

i like when you run both pups full vol. w/ the neck tone all the way down and bridge tone all the way up and out of phase. you get this cool hollow spooky sound
