The Outpost Cafe / Nicest Cease and Desist Letter Ever Written
« on: July 23, 2012, 03:03:06 PM »
Quote
Jack Daniel's has been credited forsending the nicest cease-and-desist letter ever.

The distillers recently said they were "certainly flattered" by an authors' use of their trademark on a book cover, and that because the author is "both a Louisville 'neighbor' and a fan of the brand," they're only asking him to change the cover design when the book reprints. And if he decides to change it earlier, they'd be "wiling to contribute a reasonable amount toward the cost of doing so."

Does Jack Daniel's attorney deserve a toast?

I saw this on Facebook and thought it worth passing on here. :)

The Outpost Cafe / Whole Lotta Helter

This is a pretty good use of the tracks that he had at his disposal.

I wish there was more than the clicking of Paul's bass, but this is still pretty cool. I love that both John and Percy make appearances with little comments in the background.

Edit: After listening on my work computer (with studio monitors attached) I can hear the bass in there. I was listening on my laptop when I posted. I guess this is appropriate for the Outpost. :)

You'll have to click through but this is a great video.

This is a fantastic video to watch. After 60 years, a Bell P-39 Aircobra was found intact in Russia with a Harrison Radiator in it. Did you know that the girls, like Rosie the Riveter, who built these planes wrote their names and addresses on the plane's bulkheads? They're still there!

America's First Jet Flight, October 1942

There are some great comments at the website where I first saw this, including mention of an article in the March 2012 issue of Aviation History magazine which covers some history that might be interesting for you guys.

If computers had taken off when they were actually invented...

Charles Babbage had conceived of the basic principles of a stored digital computer in 1833 - and no I’m not talking of a glorified calculator. This was the real thing, CPU, memory and programs - and it could have been built.

I read this last week and am still blown away by it. Over the years I've found it funny that each generation seems to think it's figured out something that their fathers couldn't have dreamed of. We may have access to improved materials and technology but the brains that ask the questions and then find the answers seem to have been around all along.

Gibson Basses / My Favorite EB/SG
« on: December 30, 2011, 10:20:04 PM »
Many of you know the story but it's been a while and I finally have a few pictures, so...  ;)

I saw this EB on eBay in 2002. I'd been a Thunderbird fan for years but a back and shoulder problem I have makes it hard for me to play them all night. When I saw this I thought it might fit the bill instead, so I went looking for info on it to see what it was worth and what I should bid. That's how I found the Dudepit and started down this crazy road! I learned then that this "model" really wasn't. It never existed (though Gibson actually did make a one off that I sent off to Uwe a couple years ago). As luck would have it I missed out on the auction but religiously kept an eye out for it and saw it back up on eBay two years later. That time it came home to me and has survived even the worst economic sell offs. It turned out to be an EB4 that someone filled, rerouted, and equipped with (what look to be) Greco pickups - They're not 60's Gibsons, as advertised originally. No matter though, because I love the way she sounds. This has been my number one bass for a couple years now (which really makes me miss the one I sent off to Uwe)! I have the parts to build another one (but with the new SG Bass pickups) with an EB3L I have. One of these days...

And NO, that's not what it looks like. I swear, I don't even try...  ;D

This is the one off I sent to Uwe. Not exact, but similar.

So with all the bass love Gibson's given us over the last couple of years, couldn't they finally start producing my favorite model with this body, a long scale EB/SG Bird?

Gibson Basses / Some Day They'll All Be In Germany
« on: December 30, 2011, 09:58:01 PM »
After an extended stay at Casa C, this beautiful specimen is winging its way to Germany as I type. Uwe found this way earlier in the year and had it shipped to me as his middle man. Life got in the way though and I didn't do anything with it until this week. He can fill in the details, but I think this is a prototype bird made before they reintroduced the line in 1987. Check out that beauty of a headstock, it looks HUGE. This is the first time I've seen this Hipshot in person and I must say it looks right at home (the original parts are in the case, BTW). All in all, I'm sure this will be a worth addition to ze collection.

The world`s first jet-powered man jumped off a helicopter with his rigid wing equipped with 4 jet engines. He was able to perform amazing acrobatic stunts, by just moving his body alone. He did this with the Breitling Jet Team, the world`s largest professional civilian aerial stunt team.

Bass Amps & Effects / circuit board replacement?
« on: September 24, 2011, 09:04:05 AM »
I have a friend who asked me about finding a circuit board for an Acoustic B20 combo. I did an online search for a schematic but could only find the owners manual which didn't have any service info. Do any of you guys know where I can find that info and source the board? I figured I should at least ask.

Thanks!

Bass Amps & Effects / Question about 67ish Fender Bassman Cabinets
« on: September 19, 2011, 12:00:29 PM »
29 years ago I had two fridge size cabinets and, to keep from lugging them everywhere, I picked up a 2X12 Fender Bassman cabinet that I remember as sounding incredible. I was using a GK800RB at the time and it just had that sound... A few years later a "friend" borrowed and sold the cabinet to some Japanese collector that took a container full to Japan. The idiot thought he'd be able to replace it by the time I found out. Of course he didn't, and it took years before I finally replaced it myself about ten years ago. Problem is, the cabinet I have now doesn't really sound like I remembered (though it is of the same basic vintage- same smaller cabinet, black with silver front). I know memory can play tricks but I thought I'd ask. Were there different speakers that were available in the Bassman cabinets? I don't remember which ones were in my original one, but they didn't look after market. I figure you guys might be able to help me out. Any thoughts (besides the fact that I should have beaten my friend with a bat)?
