Yeah it looks different, likely something pre-lawsuit from the Land of the Rising Sun.

Maybe it were just props provided by the tv show for the lip synced performances.
I also see a Pearl guitar.

Rob, you might be on to something, as usual the miserly Dutch are to blame. The vid I posted first is from Dutch TV show TopPop in 1975 where they obviously preferred to equip their English guests with no-name props!!!

At home, Graham Gouldmann would play his Ric with which he was more or less inseparable.

BTW, I can't believe the comment of the English moderator here at 03:21 about "the female part of the audience looking good - chewing gum" - bad old days indeed. :o

John Taylor on a 90ies Les Paul Standard/LPB 3 (toggle switch, Warwick bridge & carved top) on one of the best songs Duran Duran ever wrote ...

It's very good. But I'm taking one star off for no big round table being flipped over.

You have a point there. I miss fire-spewing android heads and heroes tied to windmills ...

There is nothing like an understated video clip to gently support the message of a song and the Duransters' Wild Boys is nothing like an understated video clip!

More Les Paul ...

Much cooler than a Dingwall. Interesting that John had at least a couple of them and liked to show them off in the videos. The first one had some decent flame too. Would love to see the LPB come back into production.
Contrary to what James Bond says, a good Gibson should be stirred, not shaken.

Love John Taylor. He really loves playing the bass. He posted some fun YouTube videos a few years ago explaining some of his parts, etc. I'd probably like him more if he wasn't so damn good looking.

Yup, he is a beautiful man and a beautiful bass player.

That somehow strikes me as unfair.

Have any of you ever noticed how Tom always waves the flag for non-rock-bass-players from girlie bands like Duran Duran and U2 (whose bass player, if I may say so, is not etc ...)?

I swear, among his sizeable PROG collection, there is a Thompson Twins maxi single lurking ...

Admittedly, the bass on Hold Me Now sounds great.  8)

Hey, I was a total new wave guy in the 80s! The FIXX, Thomas Dolby, Missing Persons, Naked Eyes, and even some of the old proggies adopted some of that (Yes, Rush, King Crimson). I dabbled in metal (not the hairspray stuff) a bit, and still loved my 70s prog. But yeah, I'm a fan of synths, sequencers, and drum machines, and was quite handy with all of those.

Tom, that mullet was très lovely.  :-*

You looked like Jeff Watson without the perm!

An LPB-3/Les Paul Standard in the kind of musical environment it really belongs! The bassist switched to a P Bass for the set they (= Shameless, a German, Danish & LA conglomerate band in the Dictators/Poison mode) would subsequently play with Cherie (at 16:52) and it didn't sound half as good as the LP Standard. The P Bass sounded like a nasty, grinding tool, the LP like an aggressive instrument.
