Title: Birthday / Dad's day present coming!
Post by: Pilgrim on June 18, 2009, 09:13:21 PM
The Yamaha was too high, but this was just right....and a bit of super glue in a syringe should fix the crack in minutes.

You got a bargain!  Mine has a small finish crack/check where the neck joins the body as a result from being left in the car on a very cold night.  Like you say a little super glue will take care of your problem.

I'm curious to hear how you like yours.  It seems people either love them or hate them depending upon their expectations.

I will be dancing around waiting for it to arrive...but I'm also putting my Kay KB-2 up for auction this weekend.  I need to generate some $ to offset the cost.

I've bought from this seller before - got an EB-0 with one pin on the bridge pulled about halfway out.  15 minutes and super glue fixed that one, too.

I think Ken gets to clean out a shed for his 50th birthday.

He's a relative of Arthur "Two Sheds" Jackson.

I sympathise with you Ken, I've just finished cleaning out my shed over the last 2 weeks.  Man, why did I keep all that crap?

AH!  I am celebrating Father's Day tomorrow by shampooing all the carpet in the house during the AM.  Hopefully in the PM I'll get some time to have a brew and a burger.

Today I rented a carpet cleaner and did four rooms, two long flights of stairs and a large free-standing carpet.  My wife took pity on me and did one additional large room.

To quote a phrase from a delightful book titled "You're Stepping On My Cloak & Dagger", my arms feel like two sacks of dead mice.   Yaaaargh.

Al... they don't have shed's in the US of A...?

... and Dave, the "shed-from-Hell" has taken up more time than I care to admit too (at least in hours), but as usual, here I am, dragging us away from the subject matter...  ;D

hmm... maybe Arthur "8-by-10" Jackson...

Uh, yeah, we have sheds (I don't have one in back but need one...that's another story).  I confess that getting a shed for your birthday somehow didn't compute.  At least my arms work today...not highly functional last evening.

Honesty is the best policy... I have to admit that the transition of my 50th was just coincidental to the purchase of a replacement shed (at a bargain discount price!), and today was the best choice for erection of the aforementioned out-house...

Normal service will be restored as soon as sheddable...  ;)

Poor Two Sheds. All he wanted to do was talk about his music. Let this be a warning.

I checked the tracking report on the Jack Casady and it should arrive tomorrow - but it was shipped signature required (which I understand) so it will take me another day to get it.

IIRC, the last bass I bought from this gent, he not only sent it sig required, but required that it be signed IN PERSON - no signature slip could be left.  This REALLY pissed me off.  It happened that the first delivery attempt was two days before I was going on a week's business trip and unless I could get to the UPS depot to pick it up, the bass would have been sent back....because I couldn't sign a delivery slip and leave it.

The upshot was that I had one evening after work (the following day) to get the instrument, so I drove 15 miles each way through a blizzard in the only car available - my 280ZX with no snow tires - to get to the damn depot 15 minutes before they closed.  It was snowing and blowing so hard that I couldn't even read the street signs - they were plastered over with snow.  I sent him a strongly worded note recommending that he NOT require an in-person signature on his shipments.  I understand the need for security, but not everyone lives in a neighborhood with barred windows and rabid dobermans in the yard.

I sincerely hope that he didn't ship sig-required-in-person this time, as it's a 30-mile round trip to the UPS depot from my house.   At least it's summer and I'm not going out of town.

It's here - it's lovely - and the neck cracks appear to be easy to work with.  There are very thin cracks between the fretboard and neck on both sides for about 2" from the nut down the neck.  At first I was thinking I wouldn't even touch them - but twisting a bit on the headstock showed that they do open a tiny bit when twisting. I think I will try the small syringe and super glue injection...but the cracks are SO small I may only be able to work on one side.

I'll post pics tomorrow.  And I can offer these notes - this Casdady bass is a moderate (not severe) neck diver, and it DOES sound different than any other bass I have.  There are many times that I really don't hear much if any difference between basses - NOT this time.  The Casady has a growl and authority that's unique in my experience.

That doesn't sound too bad. Since the cracks are on both sides, I wonder if maybe someone used very high tension strings and overcranked the truss rod to compensate. With superglue and normal tension I hope it won't give you any problems.

When I got around to actually twisting the headstock, I can hear the neck give a bit and I think I see the cracks move...but it's really hard to see.  None of my other basses including my 70's Univox hollowbody act the same way or make any sound when twisting the headstock and body opposite ways (not that I've had a lot of reason to do this. "What are you up to this evening?" ..."Oh, I'm just sittin' around, twisting my headstock." ..."OK, I didn't know that was what it was called now...")

I will work it out more this evening.

When you glue it up make sure you clamp it too to get the most wood to wood contact.  The Casady is also very sensitive to different strings.  I've settled on Blue Steels but it also sounds great with TI flats.

Since I've been a lazy butt and haven't gotten new photos, here are some from the auction...with the vendor's sig on them.

I so like the colour of that JC...

What is the scale length, Al...? Never seen one of those Gretch's, which looks even shorter...?
Title: Re: Birthday / Dad's day present coming!

The Casady is 34", the Gretsch is 30".  I'm very pleased with the sound out of both.  The Gretsch has a LOT more balls than the average inexpensive single pickup bass...it's a pretty hot pickup.  The Casady seems to gain volume as I turn the varitone switch from low to high (50-250-500).  The 50 setting is brighter, and the 500 setting has a strong low end with some real growl on the lower strings. VERY authoritative.

I've already put the Casady in the category of "will not let go of this one".  If I had to choose one short-scale from those I own, the Gretsch would be a very strong contender.  I have a matching Gretsch pickup to mount in an old Lyle hollowbody - it ought to sound super!

Ta, Al... I've always wanted to replace an EB2 copy I had as a first instrument, and this may come within a potential future budgetary range...  8)

I have never, ever played a short scale bass...  :o

Just curious, is your Lyle a 335/EB-2 style but with a slanted neck pickup?

My first eBay purchase back in 1999 was a JC that had the same issues.  I made a plunger out of two syringes and shot Titebond in there.  Never had a problem with it.

Kinda miss that one...

The Casady is definitely worth a look.  I believe that the Gibson version of this bass has active electronics, but the Epi is passive...which would be similar to the EB-2.

And don't shy away from short scale - both Dr. Bassman and I are proponents of short scale basses.  I really like playing them, and I don't hear a significant difference in the sound.  Also, changing from long to short scale is easy to me...just takes a couple of minutes for motor memory to kick in.

As the old 'Murrican saying goes, "Come on in, the water's fine"

My (paternal) grandfather spent almost all his working life at sea (approx 1900-1954), lost a ship in WW1 (RN) and WW2 (MN - Bass Straits - first vessel lost in Oz waters) - he couldn't swim a stroke...  :o

The old seafaring folk were quite straightforward when it came to deep water - let it be over quick...

I'm not so crazy... maybe... Is that pool heated...?

I don't want to get too far off track here, but there's quite a bit of difference in long vs. short scale sound. Not a matter of good vs. bad, they just have noticeably different overtone series.

When it comes to overtones, I yield to Dave.  I don't hear a lot of difference but I've decided my ears are not highly discerning.

You would in a direct comparison, even if your ears aren't attuned. If you played a Gibson EB-0 and EB-0L from the same years, even with the muddy pickup you'd be able to tell. If you used one of those 24 3/4" conversion necks from Warmoth et al on a Strat or Tele you would easily be able to tell how much difference even 3/4" makes.

Just to follow up on the new Casady bass:

I had a band practice last night and I learned both that it sounds wonderful AND I have a lot to learn about this particular bass.

- The signal sent by the Varitone really interacts with pedals, and once I figure it out there will be a lot more sound options.
- This bass has very soft attack when played fingerstyle - even less initial attack to the notes than my old Univox hollowbody.  But............
- Play it with a pick and it's a completely different bass.  There's much more treble and greatly increased attack to the notes - more difference in sound than any other bass I've played.  I know there's always a difference between finger and pick, but this is more than I've heard before.

It's gonna be a fun time learning this bass.  I don't think any of my other basses have shown the potential for such versatility.

And Dave asked:
Just curious, is your Lyle a 335/EB-2 style but with a slanted neck pickup?

It's a 335-style hollowbody with a single pickup located about 2" or 3" below the neck.  Here's a shot of the body:

Here's a shot of the whole bass.  It's a 30" short-scale:

It has almost a Fender-style headstock.  I've had it and the pickup sitting around for more than a year - just haven't gotten around to it.  I'm due to stop buying basses and do some work on the projects I have laying about.  I have these three projects:

- Lyle SG-type that has a hump in the neck - the fretboard needs to come off, electronics need to be cleaned up and re-wired.
- Aria Diamond, predecessor of the Hi-Flyer model, needs a complete refin and probably needs the fretboard taken off, old glue job cleaned up and re-attached.
- Lyle hollowbody shown above, needs pickup surround, control knobs and nut.  I have in hand both the Gretsch pickup and a correct tailpiece with rosewood insert.  There are also some finish scratches that I intend to fix using Dr. Bassman's "U-betchum Red Ryder super-glue-scratch-filling" trick.

Now your talking my language... ;D

Concrete took a bit of time to dry but off out to get the lino down tonight...

Sad but true...  ;)

Dave & Al... I remembered trying a Mustang a friend had years back, 75/76 or so, but I had an EB2 copy at the time and definitely preferred the copy - probably the neck profile... maybe I'll get the chamce to try a short-scale again some day...

Also Al, in the interest of full disclosure, I'm gonna have to post my 12 string in the guitar section, then try and seek absolution from the "Masters/Meisters..."  :o
