"1968 Gibson EB-2 Brown Electric Bass Guitar, #519039. Moderate weather checking overall, no changed parts or modifications. Some possible evidence of heel re-glue or possibly typical late 1960s Gibson workmanship. Would benefit from neck reset. Original frets have minimal wear. Original hard case included (Victoria Luggage). Condition: Good. Estimate: $1,500 - up."

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / JAEbird V build
« on: September 04, 2011, 10:28:30 AM »
...sorry not the flying kind.

I've been getting a lot of requests for one of these.  After talking with Steve and knowing Bazz uses 4 string width TBird pickups on multi string basses I decided to give that a try (if I hadn't built the proto yesterday, that Futura video would have convinced me to this AM).  The results were encouraging.  Soundwise it's pretty much the Fiver equivalent of the Futura IMO.

Here's the mockup.  I had everything lying around the shop; the neck, tuners and bridge for at least 3 years.  The body is one piece 1 3/4" inch thick poplar that a body supplier gave me as a sample of his work.  He got the job.

The V will have a similar bridge/tailpiece to the IV and Ultralites.  For the proto I borrowed the bridge from my GWB-1.  I widened the neck pocket and a few hours later plugged it in.

Now it's time to build a real one and see if it flies.  It will only be available with Thunderbuckers and cost about 20% more than a IV.  With a Honduras body it should weigh around 9.2 lbs.  Also shorter than a IV due to the headstock which is subject to change.

Thanks to Pilgrim I bought this about a month ago.  It's a great sounding bass and I can imagine it looked pretty spiffy when new, the body is a nice piece of Honduras Mahogany.  Unfortunately this one has been abused.  IMO this is not normal wear.  So time for a refin and fixing some playability problems

Heavy wear on front of body around the DiMarzio, about 3/32" will have to be removed to get it flat

Back isn't too bad, the brass is in good shape and no deep buckle rash.

Fretboard is a mess but little actual wear to the maple and frets are close to new

Sanded the back of the neck with some 180 to see what I'm dealing with.  It smelled like the sweat socks in my 9th grade gym locker after a week of P.E. in Miami's September heat.

First step will be stripping the body...easy, right?

Not difficult if you have the parts.  I sent off the what I thought was beyond repair neck to Steve, s.o.b. fixed it.  So I'm getting even by making him build me more pups.
Stripped body

Decided not to use the pin router, it's my DAY OFF, dadgummit!

Nekkid, Front jazz pup route is larger than rear, those Krazy Koreans.

No worries, another ThunderBucker Ranch product solves that.  JAEbird OEM ring polishing gets done in house.

Next is 'designing' (I use the term loosely) a pick guard/control plate, though this one is getting no guard.  If you have the right parts everything else is pretty easy.  Especially if you don't have to make them yourself.

How does it sound? THUNDEROUSTM ;D

From Bass Player.  Pretty much the usual suspects.  They apparently still don't know what JAE's FenderBird actually was...I'm sure they know the serial number of Jaco's Bass of Doom though.

I've asked my customers to send me gig shots, here's what I've received so far:

Nick Badgio #008 looking a little JAE in Salisbury

Rhea Smith #001 not looking at all that way in Asheville.  She calls it "StarKiller"

Keep 'em comin'

This is Jim's bass #0015.  Waiting on pup rings and pick guard.  I'm going to keep it around awhile to get some clips.  Hopefully when he gets it he'll think it's a POS and send it back... ;D

Bass Amps & Effects / Peavey Nitrobass 450/410 TVX

I'm attempting to help an indy band with a just breaking album (or however the music biz works these days) get a bass amp that will be reliable and loud enough to compete with a Vox valvetronix 120 and unnamed keyboard setup.  A combo will not look cool enough, especially with a JAEbird ;D.  Unfortunately a wall of Coliseums is not in the budget, $500 tops

Anyone have any experience with this setup?

Thanks!

Finally got the three depth turret stop figured out on my Onsrud.  Also it has a switched outlet that turns on the shop vac with the router.  Unfortunately that pulls too many amps and slows down the router causing the bits to dull quickly.  Now I use a separate circuit for the vac and turn it on manually.  BIG IMPROVEMENT.  This is Jim's JAEbird II which will have ThunderBucker pickups.  Since he owns a Lull I'm looking forward to seeing how they stack up against each other.
