Artec BaCHbird pickup: bring on the chrome
« on: February 02, 2009, 03:08:10 AM »
The plastic casing of the Artec humbucker on the BaCHbird looks cheap and awkward.
Not to worry: A year ago I bought one of these empty casings plus mount ring from Greatdealz at Ebay.

So I took out the toolbox and filed off the corners of the plastic casing.

The NOS Gibson casing slides over just perfectly!

I can't believe how simple this was!

WOW! But how are you gonna mount it? You must make some holes on the pickup, and that is kinda dangerous!

Well I have two options:

1. Drill a hole through the Artec and hope nothing gets damaged. I don't think there is anything in that area the might get damaged.

2. Just use the two screws of the Artec. And slide the Gibson cover over the Artec once installed.

To make it look right I could use three dummy screws; Snap off the head of a screw and glue it onto the casing with industrial superglue.

I think so too, but you can never be 100% sure.

They have them on their website. A fellow Dutchman (Bernarduur) sent them an email the other day and they replied they do offer them for sale.

But I cant find them on Ebay. The ones on Ebay aren't AlNiCo5 like the BaCH pickup. And they have MM style polepieces instead of the blade piece.

Looks nice Rob, but won't the extra cover affect the sound in the end?

Haven't noticed it yet. But if it does appear to affect sound in a negative way I could always take off the topside of the plastic casing.

A metal cover can slightly reduce high end. Having a layer of plastic in between a metal cover and the coils means that you can't get the coils quite as close to the strings, but it isn't going to change the actual sound of the pickup.

I was waiting for you to chime in.  I remember this topic from numerous other discussions!

The way it's been explained to me is that a metal cover adds some capacitance to the circuit. The capacitance combined with the pickup's inductance will cause some highs to be filtered out. I'm sure Jake could explain it better or correct me if I'm wrong.

I can't believe what a bunch of fakers you are!

At this rate, you will all be using botox in a few years.

It would never occur to me to make something on a bass look less cheap or less new. Either it does its job (and then I prefer aural qualities to beauty) or it doesn't, in which case it is off! In fact, I like something that looks trashy and cheap, but sounds great.
