Title: Jaguar Bass
Post by: angrymatt on June 10, 2008, 12:02:25 PM
Looks like the other two colors (Alpine White and Sunburst) are available in the states now.  I might need me a white one.

I noticed that myself the other day. I'm a big fan of the Jaguar and it's about time they released those colors again here in the states. The market/mark-up for those on eBay is huge. About $200-$300 more + shipping stateside.
I almost had a relative pick one of those up when he was supposed to honeymoon in Japan. But he wasn't able to go due to an emergency surgery.

They have it listed under the Fender site now also, for those that haven't seen the magnificence that is Sunburst and Vintage White. http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0259505506

IMHO a black Jag bass looks much better with a b/w/b pickguard. This pic is from a Jeannie Pickguards eBay auction page:

I agree. They're very eye catching, if only because they don't have the white pg.

I Agree. Actually the Red would look good with one too (at least in my mind).
Or I've seen the black with a Pearl pg that also looks nice.

I think the black would look wicked with a tort pickguard.

Tort belongs on tortoises and nowhere else.  :P  ;)

I think the Jag basses look great! The one thing I'd read about them was that they tend to have hum and RF problems until the owner adds shielding.

So I grabbed one at Geetar Center and tried it out...plugged it in, first thing I heard was hum.  I still like the looks, but I think the reports are probably right.  If you get one, plan to spend some time shielding the cavities and cleaning up the wiring.

I want one.  ;D

I think the sunburst and white versions look much better than the red and black ones and it's a pity we had to wait taht long before these colours arrived in Europe.

I have one problem with the Jag. The J pick ups. They should have made a nice P90 like cover for the pick ups. Or even better: Chrome!

I really can't see the appeal. To me the switches make it look cheap, and even if I could get over that, I agree with Chris that the J pups don't look right. If, on top of that, it hums, well, I just don't get it.

I agree with that completely. I've thought seriously about buying one, shielding the cavities (and whatever else it may take to eliminate the hum, if its present), and putting in a pair of Kent Armstrong Lipstick jazz Pickups (Like the Lakland Scheff). I just wish the pickups were a little farther apart like the Scheff.
Ohh my 'Prime Rib' dreams and ambitions. Too bad they're on a budget of 'PB&J's'  ;D

The look without the switches............................or the price tag ! Btw I like SX basses very much. http://www.rondomusic.com/sjmbt3ts.html

The nicest Jag basses I ever saw were from a Custom Shop run of four from around 1999-2000. Sherwood Green metallic, white competition stripes (a la the competition Mustangs), no guard or switches, one twin-jazz bridge pickup, passive controls. One of them was for sale at Elderly for about $1500-1600. I should have bought it.

That SX is nice, but I don't like the really square part uf the pickguard. And it has J pick ups again. But thios bass could be a nice project bass.

The one Fender I would seriously consider buying. I would to see pictures of those custom shop ones.

I became aware of them because of a guy who posted at the FDP in the early years. IIRC, he had spotted a couple at Elderly and bought one. Or maybe Elderly only had one of them, I'm not sure. But after he bought his, there was another one still for sale, from Elderly or from a dealer on eBay. I had bookmarked a photo of it that he had put up on Photopoint, but they went belly up. My first computer  had such a small hard drive I hardly ever saved pics of basses to it.

Ilan, is that one of the CS run? I don't remember the guard but otherwise it looks right.

Aren't Jaguar basses really just J basses with different cosmetics and a few (well actually many) switches?

The regular (MIJ) Jaguar basses do have J pickups with an active preamp that can be turned on and off plus series/parallel switching.

Dave - it's a CS and the time frame is the same, but I thought it was a one-off. Guess I was wrong. Is it possible they did a run of four and some didn't have guards?

Possible, but more likely I'm just not remembering the guard. Especially since I just scoured the FDP archives and found a discussion where the guard shape was mentioned. From what I can gather, it came up on the FDP after Steve Barr mentioned seeing it on his Fender CS calendar for 1999, meaning the run was probably made in 1998. The one on the calendar was LPB, and the Sherwood Green that Elderly had was bought by FDP'er MikeG. Mark Kendrick from Fender said that Flea had one of them, in black, and that Fender had the "original" which I suppose meant it was one of the four.

I owned three Jaguar basses up until a year ago (all at the sametime HHR, OW, SB). Fender did a poor job of grounding the electronics. All that's needed to eliminate the hum is to ground the 3 cavities where the electronics are located to one another. No shielding of the cavities is required. You can do it, but it's not necessary.

What kinda pickup is that? Seems like a double J with MM polepieces.

Looks like the bridge pickup they used for the American Deluxe P.

I like the looks of the Jags and was almost tempted into buying one last week, but when I plugged it in I found neither its passive nor its active sound an eye opener. Passive it sounded like a Jazz, but not a great one, and active it sounded like a hundred other basses do, I missed a Fender characteristic.

It does but it also looks a little skinnier than the Fender's, they were humbuckers, I had one of those, strange combination.

Thanks! If I decide to get one (which I fear the temptation will get me one day when the cash is right) I'll make sure to do that. I always appreciate helpful advice. =)

I dig that 'burst one.  If I had any cash, I'd definitely jump on one... :P

I like the RED w/ matching headstock.  I tried one instore a while back.  IMO  it was at least as good as the (far more $$$) MIA jazz there.  Good array of sounds from it. Felt good too.  I want one too!!!! ;D
