Bassist Union rule violation
« on: September 16, 2012, 04:37:24 PM »
I'm guess the band leader didn't see me playing above the 5th fret, because he still paid me anyway.

You probably didn't even need to show up.

If I had a dollar for every time someone's made that joke about our Doors band, I'd have earned more than the $200 I made on Saturday night :-)

Actually, if you delve into the Doors catalog, much of the album tracks have bass guitar - including many of the best known songs.  And I've never met a keyboard player who can play the bass line on "LA Woman" LOL

The Strange Days album starts out with a bass slide, hard to do on keys. Seems to me a Doors tribute bassist would use the seventh and ninth frets quite a bit.

For the Doors, you have my official blessing to pass the 5th fret.

I've played LA Woman and found part of it to be very challenging because of the speed and string crossing.  Any bass player who can play it as Scheff recorded it has my respect!

Spot on - I pretty much set up camp between the 5th and 9th frets in this band.

I know my history.  Robbie Krieger often provided real bass parts, instead of Manzerak's keys.  Lonnie Mack did the bass for "Roadhouse Blues". I know they used bass in the studio, HOWEVER, the public view of The Doors will always be that keyboard bass.  Did they ever use a bass player live?  I know that Jack Conrad came in late (was it on Full Circle?)

It's still a good joke.

There was no bass player on the Sullivan appearance.

Jack Conrad toured with them for a year or two after Morrison's death - Ray did the singing (and he was good - check out the footage below from the Doors in Europe documentary - Jim didn't make it to the venue one night so Ray sang the entire show - it sounds very good).  They also had a full time bass player when they first started out, but he left before the first album was made.

Cool pics Mark.  I noticed one on your new avatar over on OBF.
I'm with you on the need for clever bass on Doors material.  Robbie's bass work was very good, and undervalued in the main.
Basses:  Gibson '78 G3 & '06 T-bird, '96 Ric 4003, '83 Steinberger L2, '11 Warwick Star, '01 Gretsch G6072, '11 Fender 60th P, '78 Guild B302F
Rig: Ampeg, Hiwatt, Fender TV

FWIW - I was in a band that did "Touch Me".  I was told that "it hovers around an A".  Nothing could be further from the truth.  You won't get any opposition from me when you say that playing bass on some Doors songs take a little work.

It's a lot trickier than the Stones tribute band I'm also in.  I can cruise in the Stones band, but in the Doors band I need to really concentrate at times.
