Gibson Basses / T-bird pickup cover, anyone?
« on: October 14, 2010, 03:12:11 AM »
This here following is something I've often thought about as worth discussing in our little corner of the world. The T-bird BRIDGE covers are quite easily found on Ebay, though the difference in prices is hugh. But the cover above the PICKUP, the one CLOSE TO THE NECK, them you won't see, not even seldom. How come? Ideas? Isn't it a bit strange that the leftover ones from the bridge position is possible to get, but not the other ones.
And, of course, these are the covers I want! And I am almost at the edge of saying - need!
Are we more than just me who wants them? Any kind of solution somewhere?

Is there any way to track the original colour of an instrument, by using the serial number? The instrument in question is an P-bass from October 1965, with number 11 03 20.

Anyone knows if it's possible to find nuts for a Thunderbird bridge, 60's style? What I'm looking for is the ones with one side of the hole closed, if you follow.

Fender Basses / Squire jazz bass jv
« on: August 10, 2009, 06:16:42 AM »
Hi! After several years with Epiphone Rivoli, followed by more then 20 years with a '65 Precision, at times alternating with a T-bird, and from about ten years ago Epiphone Embassies, I thought I had found the love of my life in the Bach T-bird. Then one night, couple of weeks ago, I forgot to bring a bass to the rehearsal room. But there was a Squire Jazz Bass waiting in a corner, ready to be tested. Now, in the old, pre-Beatlic, days, the Jazz Bass never occured to me as a suitable bass for rock, blues or pop. It was, of course, only the name that kept me from it. The P-bass was what I had in mind for the long run. A cool bass!
Stupid, as I am, I've never touched a Jazz bass. Until the moment I'm talking about. Wow, pure harmony! Super slim neck, such economy, such ergonomy! I didn't even have to stretch my left arm the slightest to get to the G or F on the E string. (The E tone was even simplier, can you believe!!!) The ergonomy was most impressing. Last Thursday I decided not to bring any bass for rehearsal. I had to try the Squire again, to see if it really was as fantastic as I remembered it. It was.
Now, the sound does not impress me. Doesn't matter which way I turn the buttons, except for volume. So I checked with a collector. He told me to look out for a Squier Jazz JV, early 80's model, that should have real good PU's.
Is there anyone here, who is familiar with that bass? Or do you have any other ideas concerning Jazz basses? Is there any other good copies around?

Other Bass Brands / What model should BaCH build next?
« on: June 16, 2009, 03:36:43 AM »
Now that we're getting close to a beautiful ending of thi project, what would be the obvious continuation? There's still dreams out there, dreams to fulfill (with a gravely voice). What about a reversed model T? In colours such as the ones we've got, plus cherry red? If it was possible to get them, at around the same price, there would be (almost) no need to look furthur, as Ken Kesey once put it.

Gibson Basses / Pickguard Eb 0 1960
« on: February 20, 2009, 10:22:04 AM »
I seem to remember that the subject of new produced pickguards for the Eb 0 1960s model been in the air. There was somebody who produced them today, but in another material than the original. Anyone remember?

Gibson Basses / Pickguard for Eb0, 59-61
« on: October 20, 2008, 01:57:04 AM »
Anybody out there who knows where I could get the pickguard mentioned above? I need it in soft plastic, so that I can bend it a bit. The pickguard is for a rebuilt bass of the Korean brand Lotus, long scale, neck-through-body, '65 T-bird pickup, Schaller mechanics, Badass bridge, Rotosound strings, ruby-red body in, about, the same looks as a first generation Eb0. Great sound. Nice looks. But she needs a black pickguard to look the part. As the body is arched a bit, the pickguard needs to be possible to bend a bit. Any ideas?

Gibson Basses / F.f.f.four basses
« on: February 21, 2008, 10:15:12 AM »
Do not know whether this will work. Anyway, I am trying to include a picture that I took yesterday of my Gibsonrelated basses. If it works, I guess you all know these to the right and left, are Epiphone Embassies. They have a bit different sounds, and the colour also differs.
The black one is a smashed up Ripper I got a couple of years ago. Someone had taken the pickups from her, so, fast as lightning, I fixed her up with a Gibson T-bird pickup. I changed the pickguard, everything inside it, and the knobs. Voila! Here's the result. I have to agree with Uwe, concerning the black pickups. They sure's got att brutal sound, if you want that.
The red one is my pet. She began life as a Korean bass, with the brand name Lotus. I like the looks of the first version of the EB0 a lot, I've always wanted one, and thought this one reminded me a bit of them. But short scale is not for me. So I got hold of this mahagony bass, neck through body, and went to my luthier, Leif. As I had a '65 T-bird (or is it Embassy?) pickup laying around, I of course went for that one. Leif fixed it all. Changed tuners, bridge, pickup and knobs (from a P-bass. Those knobs looks just magnificient!). The neck is a bit fat, but after a few hours it suits just fine.
So here they are, if everything worked as it should. If not... Well, I'll talk to my kids.
