The Bass Zone / 3 strings
« on: September 17, 2012, 10:50:52 PM »
For a couple of years I've been thinking about making a bass with just three (3) strings. The background to that idea is the fact that I use the G string quite little, it's just for the occasional funk, which - to be honest - bores the f-ck out of me. In my mind it reduces the bass to litle more than a rhythm instrument. I want the bass to be part of a moving floor, yep, but still bringing flowers and - at times - interesting lines.
Besides, a 3-string would look kinda kool!
So I'm into these thoughts about a 3-string. Maybe with B at the bottom, followed by E and A? Or should I go for a E .110 bottom?
Is there anyone out there who's tried this concept? Are there any serial manufacturers of a 3-stringer?
And, would a T-bird pup do?

Really like Johhny Paycheck, but what bass is he using? Baldwin, I read, Teisco too. But what bass is it? And has anyone here tried one out?

Anyone got an idea if this marvelous bass player is Chris Chaney or Jason Falkner?

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Bendable pickguard material?
« on: April 19, 2012, 01:27:42 AM »
Some years ago I bought a long scale Lotus bass on the bay, just because it got some features in the look that somehow reminds me of the beatiful Gibson Eb 0 from -59. I took an immediate liking to it. It surprised me when I saw that the bass is a neck-through. Now I'm in the process of turning the Lotus into the illegitimate son of Mr T-bird and the pregnant Miss Eb 0. That process includes, so far, these changes:
- Clover style tuners
- Bad Ass II bridge
- T-bird pup
- Relocating input jack to the side, complete with black jackplate
- Moving the controls to Eb 0 style positions
- Rebuilding the head top contours into Gibson style profile
My problem of the day is the pickguard, as the body is kinda arched, or built in two different levels. I bought black self-adhesive thin plastic and shaped it to look like the Eb 0 pickguard. It works, but doesn't have the right lustre, and looks kinda wrong. So; is there any knowledge concerning material that could be used to form a pickguard that looks thick enough? Or do you think I should go for another shape, like the pickguard in the Les Paul Junior, double cutaway model?
Here's an adress where you can see the Lotus (got the same colour as mine):

And here's how the Junior guard I'm thinking of, looks:

Your thoughts are very welcome! Thanks!

Bass Amps & Effects / Ampeg V4B
« on: October 20, 2011, 07:20:27 AM »
Alles gut! For the last 30 years I've been using a Fender Dual Showman with 2x15" for my basses. Before that there's a Bassman 50, an Acoustic, a couple of Dynacords, and - first of all - a Luxor radio from the 40's. Never thought about getting me an Ampeg.
Then I listened to a bass playing friend of mine. Fantastic tone with a lot of rumble. That was a Danelectro longhorn through an Ampeg V4B from the 70's...
So now I'm checking out for that amp. Anyone in this here bunch, and placed in Europe, who knows where to find one?
And as I know there's folks here who's got all the information needed, concerning the V4B: Would it be possible to get your opinions on that amp?

Gibson Basses / Gibson neck pup cover
« on: September 01, 2011, 11:24:27 AM »
Howdy, folks! I seem to remember, that not to long ago someone here had the idea of making string covers for the neck pup, for the mighty T-birds, and other basses using the same pup cover. Did it work out?

Gibson Basses / Gibson handrest neck pup
« on: June 22, 2011, 03:32:02 AM »
At last, as Etta James finally and finely put it, one (1) handrest, that seems to be for a T-bird neck pup, has been sighted on the bay. Though the $ is, at least, a couple to many in my opinion as I need more than one of these. Ain't nobody making this stuff for people like me, and you, no more?

The Outpost Cafe / Excellent Black Country
« on: June 05, 2011, 01:20:24 AM »
Never thought Glenn Hughes had anything left to give. The I listen to Black Country Communion 2! Wow, what an expressive bass player he is! And the whole band (Joe Bonamassa, Jason Bonham, Derek Sherinian) rocks really great, though maybe some might think "2" is too close to Zeppelin. I'm not one of them, at least not all the time! This is a great album with intricate arrangements, and lots of driving bass stuff. Enjoy!

The Outpost Cafe / Dylan's bass players
« on: May 24, 2011, 09:55:48 AM »
Dylan turns 70 today. He's a great artist, in my opinion.
What most people don't think about, concerning Dylan's road band, is the important part of his bass players. Listen to Rob Stoner of Dylan's Rolling Thunder band, or Tony Garnier, who's been in the band since 89. It was Stoner who took Dylan in the direction of rockabilly, and Garnier is obviously the leader, and glue, of the current band. Any insightful comments?

The Outpost Cafe / Diggin' Shindig's dogs!
« on: May 04, 2011, 05:12:32 AM »
Holy cow! You Americans are lucky ones! You had all this good music, while we folks in the cold North had to enjoy the pleasures of Säkkijärven Polka. While being a great tune, one needed a shot of r'n'b, with just a little rock'n'roll on the side.
Don't ask me how I found the following, but somehow, while fooling around looking for something-nothing on the net, I went to Youtube. And got into the house band of your TV-show Shindig. They were called The Shindogs. Never heard of them before. Listened, and heard magnificient guitar playing. It was James, yes, the James, Burton on Telecaster, another guy on Gibson guitar, a bass player on what could be them plywood basses - you all know which ones I'm refering to -  and a drummer plus keys. Apparently the band members were different from time to time.
One version looked like this, found on a page devoted to Burton.
http://www.james-burton.net/coppermine/displayimage.php?album=43&pid=758#top_display_media
The bass in the picture we all recognize, and it's not the one mentioned above.
But who were the other guys? Did they tour? Do you have any memories of The Shindogs? Were there any hoopla about them (now I know you guy's got a vivid imagination, som just let the pictures keep on coming)? And was that bass really a...?
While you're thinking, here's a tune with some great guitar playing:

Never heard anyone moving around that classic riff so freely. Nice Everly singing.

The Outpost Cafe / Wyman back with Stones!
« on: March 26, 2011, 02:43:01 AM »
Billy Boy is back with them ol' Rolling ones! Yes, this next month, April, sees the release of a tribute to Ian Stewart, keys and roads for the Stones, Boogie 4 Stu. Main artist is English pianist Ben Waters. I've heard a couple of the tracks, and they swing!
On Dylan's Watching the river flow, the whole of the Stones of the 70's and 80's gets together for the first time since -92. Wyman playes a simple, but quite swinging bass line, the one I call 1+1, (root + the opposite, in this case G + D, guess educated musician's got another name for the movement. To confuse further, I also use the term 2+2, what Wyman uses on Everybody needs somebody. Though that's a completely different record).
As the end of Watching.. is beginning, Wyman, in a typical, and groovy (is there anybody out there still using that term "groovy?) way slides his way upwards the neck, but just like a teaser to remind us of what he used to do.
In all, (I llisten to Tribute 4 Stu while writing) a cool, relaxed and swinging record. Maybe even Groovy!
