Fender Telecaster Bass (early 70's) Pots
« on: February 02, 2016, 10:38:13 AM »

Group,

I have a 1972 Fender Telecaster Bass that I bought as parts and need to know what rating the pots should be.

Are both Volume & Tone rated at 250K?
...and what is the tone cap value?

Ideally would like to use Fender parts... new is fine, not hung up on vintage or NOS.

Thanks in advance!

Curt

The second edition Tele Bass had 1 meg volume and tone pots and an .022uF cap.

Are there early '72 Telecaster Basses with the single-coil pickup? Found this "official" Fender article on the Telecaster Bass - better written than I expected, plus there are some nice pictures.

The Telecaster Bass with the humbucker grabbed my attention when I was in high school - I had a Fender Japan catalog/poster that had one on it - must have been around 1985. Never thought I would end up with one!

Would love to see yours when it is fully restored!

I have a February '79 Tele that needed the big humbucker I ended up using the Squier  unit from the Vintage Modified Tele they put out a few yaers ago. It certainley looks the part and sounds like I remember those big old beasts.

Did you intend to post a link to the article?

I don't know if the single coil production extended into 1972 or exactly when in 1972 the humbucker version came out.

The only thing I can think of to add is that there was a Fender Japan version produced for a few years in the mid-'80s for the Japanese market, with some version of the humbucker. That's the one that caught my eye, though I never saw one in person. Interesting to see a couple for sale recently on eBay & Reverb.

I have a WRHB, minus the '70s Telebass it came from. As I said in another thread, it has quite a mids-focussed tone nut entirely unlike a dark P bass pickup. Quite a nice tone, but very much a baked-in EQ profile.

Anybody want to buy it off of me?
