I did the unthinkable....
« on: May 04, 2015, 08:38:13 AM »
...I gave up a Thunderbird for a new MIA Geddy Lee jazz...this bass is incredible and I couldn't pass it up.  What a neck on this....feels like a custom shop bass.

The Geddy basses have a lot of fans because of the necks.  I hope it's a good one for you!

How is it different? The neck on the original Geddy that my son had was way too thin for my taste.

It's a bit thicker, not by much - perhaps more rounded feel to it.  And it feels like you picked up an old 72 in a way by the rubbed down neck finish and feel they did with it.

The neck is thicker on the USA. The blocks are pearloid.

I have to say that the neck on my MIA 60th. anniversary j bass is fantastic and the bass sounds great.  There are some j basses that are winners, sounds like you got one!

Well, there are good reasons so many people like J-basses. They tend to run heavier than Precisions, but they are pretty darn nice.

My son has a 75 Jazz and the neck on that is slightly chunkier than other Jazzes I have played.

My 60th Jazz reminds me of old Lakland in quality: that bass hits WAYYYYY above its price point!

Ouch!!! And behind my back!!!

But I like Jazz Basses too. They are both more refined than the gnarly P Basses and offer fuller bass frquencies. I just listened to Ten Years After's Recorded Live 2013 Remaster a few days ago which now features bonus tracks with an extended bass solo by Leo Lyons and he basically sounds like an electrified double bass (which no doubt also has to do with him always plucking the strings at somewhere just behind the 12th fret!) . Which is what Jazz Basses were aimed to do right from the start, though Geddy can turn any bass into a Ric!

Just as Sir Paul can turn a Rick into a Höfner.

That REFIN '61 at Chicago Music Exchange was a KILLER. NOT a dead note on the neck.....the sustain....But not worth $7,000......and certainly NOT worth trading a '65 T bird II for it...
