15 Songs Entertainment Weekly is Loving?
« on: January 29, 2015, 03:28:23 PM »
I found this article: 15 songs EW's music staff is loving this winter.  Listened to each of them for at least a minute on YouTube. (Some of them were hastily abandoned after that mark.)

I found myself asking: is their entire staff either 12 years old or gangsta?  Out of the 15, there were 5 I wouldn't actively get up and change channels if I heard them on the radio, and ONE, "Lampshades of Fire" by Modest Mouse, that I listened to all the way through.

What I found was mostly crap, and some extreme crap. I guess I'll go back to my 60's and 70's oldies now.

No, no, just ignore anything mainstream/top 40 (with some exceptions, especially recenty, vs say the late 90s/early 2000s).  Check out your local indie scene; lots of great music these days, in just about any genre you like; just not on top 40 radio.

Which reminds me.  Soundgarden dude covering Billy Jean made me want to shoot myself.

I kinda liked that cover, Jake! I even like the original. Bubbles' buddy had his moments.

But I didn't know a single song or artist on that list.  :-X

I know you've heard of Modest Mouse, Uwe.... because you've said how you weren't too fond of them before :-* ... and a little surprised that you haven't heard of Nicki Minaj.  ... like maybe while standing in line at the checkout counter and perusing the tabloid front pages for something to pass the time.

And to clarify, I have no issue with the original Billie Jean. Chris Cornell's voice is just not something I ever found enjoyable.

I've only heard of Nicki Minaj and Modest Mouse and don't like either.

At my age I'm happy to be out of that loop.

I like what I've heard from Mark Ronson.  Modest Mouse is one of the few bands that makes me turn off the radio.  Even Johnny Marr couldn't help them .

The only one I've heard of is Minaj and my fragile psyche can take her videos.  I'll pass on the rest just out of fear.

This list is good evidence of my increasing decrepitude.  And I'm OK with that.

This ^^^

And this ^^^

My wife and I had dinner with another couple the other night. LONG time friends, but my buddy's wife is apparently into a lot of top 40 stuff. She was offended when I ripped on Katy Perry, etc. and made a remark along the lines of "stay current old man!". She's 11 years older than me BTW.  :P Anyway, my response was - it doesn't have to be in the top 40 to be current. There's good music being made out there. It's just harder to find and keep up with, especially at my advanced age! I'm totally baffled that Rolling Stone magazine treats stuff like One Direction and Justin Bieber as if it's actual art. And I'm even more baffled that any adults have an interest in it. They have about as much artistic integrity as a can of Coke.

In self-defense, neither my wife nor I subscribed to it - just started appearing.  I think a number of magazines are quietly sending free copies to people so they can quote higher numbers for their circulation base.
