Thanks, Dave.  That Zoom is amazing.  I set it about 3 feet in front of the cabinet, spent 30 seconds getting a level and done.  Less than $160 delivered.  I haven't tried the video cam but the stuff I've seen on Youtube is really good.

The control cavity was fun, I did one like it about 8 years ago.  It was easier this time.

What type of bit do you use for that long channel from the jack to the pickup? No doubt using the shopsmith as a horizontal drill helps a lot, but there's always the tendency of standard twist drill bits to wander.

Yeah, I just had to give the Zoom a try after seeing a Remco Hendrix video of one and then checking out Youtube vids.

I cut a 36" long 5/16" dia. regular twist bit down to 18" and made sure the table was absolutely parallel to the bit.  Then I stacked 1-1/2" thick scrap on the way tubes of the shopsmith until the bit rested on it to keep it from deflecting.  I think the 5/16" diameter was a big help.  It was part of a $10 3 piece set from Harbor Freight...have to confess it came out better than expected.  Last time I used a 1/4" bit that wasn't very sharp in a hand drill.  It wandered off.

It's rather an inspiration to see a Shopsmith used so well! It's a pretty darn fine tool if used carefully.

I have (and use) my dad's 1954 Shopsmith, with original warranty papers and owner's manual. It was purchased at Carr Hardware in Ames, Iowa and cost $276 including the optional rollers. Prices have changed a bit since then.

I paid $200 for this one about 9 years ago, it's an early 90's model and came with original docs and 2 big Shopsmith 'How To' binders as well as all the standard accessories.  Mainly I use it for horizontal boring these days as I've reacquired more dedicated machines.

I have the Shopsmith,and the band saw add-on. That's a really handy unit. I don't do a lot of stuff, so its versatility is a very good thing.
