Gibson TBs stock colours.
« on: July 13, 2013, 04:12:32 AM »
Morning.
My Italian friend Crem (who graces these pages periodically and plays for the quite amazing Milano trio 'The Full Treble'), is currently sporting a Sapphire Blue TB...he tells me it was a limited run (200?) for the Japanese market that his girlfriend found for him (lucky guy, eh?).  See the bass below.  Needless to say there isn't anything on the web about this model (much the same as my beloved Gothic TBH).

It got me thinking about solid stock finishes.  I've seen photos of the red Twiggy Ramierez TB which may (or may not) have been a one off demo model, obviously Crem's blue one, the new anniversary model.  Black, white/ivory aside, what other colours were there?  Limited editions/whatever.  Anyone got any under the bed originals they'd care to add to this thread?  It seems Epiphone players are better served on the finish front!

Cheers
Paul

Gibson is so stodgy with finishes - Big point for me, you can get a Les Paul in countless finishes, not so a Thunderbird. The blue ones were a short run for the Japanese market and various one offs have been done as well.............I got tired of looking for something cool from them long ago, thus of my 5 Gibsons, 3 are custom. I sincerely hope Epi does some other finishes on the new Classic  :)

Hey Paul, thanks: what a great picture  ;D!

Yeah, it seems there's nothing on the web about my Sapphire Blue. But I got the original papers in the case and I found out the story behind him. Gibson US did this limited edition for   Yamano Music in Japan back in 2000.

It plays great, super aggressive and it is amazing on stage.

Phew, six posts into this thread and no one has mentioned chrome hardware or pups yet. You guys are really letting up.

A looker, no doubt, but there is a reason why zebrawood is used in upscale kitchens mostly: Durable, kitchen knife-, heat- and fluids-resistant, but kind of deadish-middish sounding. The limited musical use of kitchen furniture proves the point.

Any maho wing TBird has more natural presence and sustain. Those zebrawood wings add nothing positive to the natural sound of a TBird, but they sure take something away. The Zebrabird sounds like a smaller cutout of the typical TBird sound spectrum. Its one advantage is that its bony sound is more focused, some players might like that if they think that a TBird is generally "too much everywhere".

Ironically, the maple-winged Nikki Sixx Signature doesn't sound that great either - you would guess that the maple wings add snap, attack and general brightness, but no, in fact the opposite is true, it sounds duller (and bassier) than reg all maho Birds.

If he leaves it out in the sun so long that the sides melt, maybe it will be mistaken for a Warwick.  :P

How many basses Gibson basses (or for that matter, basses) do you actually own?
