'66 Sonic Blue Coronado I

Crappy bass but what a great fin. Not $3,500 great, but drool-worthy. When it was new and not yellowed, this must have been a jaw dropper. From Rumble Seat Music's website: "Stamped 'Special' on the headstock This Rare Custom Color Bass was used to Promote Fender's New Model"

The guy who bought the same bass twice — first in 1977 and again in 2023

Dr. Bassman had a flirtation with one and IIRC he loved the look and finish, but found the sound mediocre.

Too bad they aren't a better bass - I LOVE the look.

I've always loved the look of Coronados.
You're right, that one was probably stunning when it was bright and new, though it is still a great example of the breed.

His was a Coronado II. I had one too, the tone was okay with rounds but it was the worst neck diver I ever had despite the light weight.

If I ever were to buy another, it would be a Coronado I.

A fun factoid on these things is that the guitar and bass bodies were the same - same pup and pot holes.  The bass had the thumb/finger rest holes, and the guitars had pickguard holes.  So if you ever need a body, there are plenty.
Model One and Schallers?  Ish.

Doesn't drbassman have another one which he made from a Coronado guitar body? IIRC he used different pickups and bridge.
