But not totally different.

The original surround on his '64 was the wide type with the taper, then when RIC replaced the pickup with a high-gain they also replaced the surround with the newer rounded corners rectangular type.

Yes, they are similar, but they are different, something most of us use as identifiers/differentiators when discussing traits of model years, for example.  When Rickenbacker replaced the pickup and surround it was with a "modern" one. Paul's original surround has the short tail on the back end of it.  The PMC's surround is like that on Chris Squire's RM1999, with the square upper corners, whereas Macca's had round upper corners, like this one:

I have seen modern surrounds modded to look like that.

Yes, they can be modded to be pretty close in appearance; I think the rear flange is still a bit shorter on the modern surrounds vs. a real 1963 one.  I wonder if Graham has a modern surround to compare with the one on his '63 4001.  Those two PMC basses look like they were basically a 4001CS with a reversed headstock, or visa versa.  Or, more likely, based on the early 4001V63s that featured that surround shape.

Both from Olivia's, must be from someone liquidating his collection.

On Reverb: 1976 3000 in very nice shape.

No idea whether or not that price is reasonable.

IMHO $1.9K is 4001 money, not 3000.

Someone should come up with an alternative pickguard shape that will make a 3000 look more elegant. It looks like a big blotch.

It would be cool to have a shorty Ric, but that's too much money. Doesn't help that it's outside the U.S.

Recent 4003S with vintage style parts. Wide guard (but still 1" so no extra routing, but new screw holes), plexi TRC, HS surround, gap-tooth tailpiece and plexi tug bar. Cool looking bass with attractive grain on the fretboard. $1,450 starting bid

I know a couple of dealers who will sell you a new, unmodified 4003S for less than his starting bid.

"This instrument is very rare." Yes, b/c almost no one would buy them. Wouldn't surprise me if there were still a few unsold ones somewhere.

And exclusive among Rick basses, the 2050 has the gold-plated Schaller tuners with the "Rickenbacker" brand name embossed on the baseplate. The 2050 was the bass model I had the hardest time finding photos for the book. Pretty rare. The trimmed-down 2030 was much more easy to find.
