Zappa autobiography
« on: February 13, 2008, 07:48:36 AM »
I read Zappa's autobiography. Some interesting & bizarre stuff in his lifetime.

Some facts I was not aware of-

Recorded Grand Wazoo & Wackajawacka from a wheel chair.

He could not sing & play and the same time

Freak Out was the first rock double record set

Hot Rats is the greatest selling record in 1970 to when the book was written

Spent all his money getting orchestra pieces transcribed and performed.

A great book. I wish they would have gone more in depth on the various bands, past & at the end of his career.

Went to jail for fake pornography for 6 months in San Berdino

Was turned off by jazz when he toured with Duke Ellington. Duke had to beg his manager for $10 and he would not give it to him. Came to the conclusion jazz = poverty and quit the tour.

The whole Mannequin f@#$ker and weenie casts of Jimi Hendrix

He was pretty uncomplimentary about Jack Bruce, if what I read elsewhere is right. Something about being impossible to play with and having a different agenda from playing bass.

What's the book called, I need to read it.

If its the book I think it is, its called "The Real Frank Zappa" by Frank Zappa/with Peter Occhiogrosso. I've been a Zappa fan from the beginning, I still miss him I couldn't wait until he was on tour again.
