Was this done by Gibson?

Look at the painted neck & back of the headstock & neck joint. I have never seen this done before. Is it stock?

You'd kind of expect Gibson to do a fin like that with a rosewood or ebony fretboard, but otoh it looks like something you could have certainly asked for in the seventies. After all my pelham blue Grabber has a black painted neck, back of headstock AND black painted maple fretboard too and came that way from the factory.

Whether legit (probably is) or not, the fin is lovingly done and gives the whole instrument a more valuable appearance. If it's a refin, it was done well. Very nice specimen no matter what the story behind it.

I've never seen one like that before, but it doesn't look like some hacker's afterthought. Could well be a factory job.

The Burst Rippers were painted like that so I would think it is factory made.

That's a good looking G-3 but that price is outta hand! Good for him, but I guess I won't be getting one any time soon if that's what they're going for now.

That's a pretty rare & nice one, but is going high, I would say, at least at this point.

I think a thousand bucks is ok for a specimen as rare-finned and pristine as this one, with everything else going up, why shouldn't G-3s? Certainly a better bass than either of its close relatives.

Naw, my CAR G-3 has a natural maple neck, it's just the ebony fretboard that is special. There are also late G-3s out there with three piece maple necks as opposed to the standard one piece.

My DeAmond Starfire RI has a painted neck like that and so has my '64 Burns. Don't know if it was common with Gibson.
