Advice needed - 70s P neck on a new Aerodyne body?
« on: December 08, 2017, 08:53:41 AM »
For my fretless project - saw this Aerodyne body on eBay - does anyone know if the pocket will fit a vintage 70s P neck?

I don't know for sure, but the Aerodyne body ought to accept another 20-fret 4-bolt Fender neck.

My temptation is to say yes, but there are occasional wrinkles in the Fender stuff I'm not familiar with.

Not to speak heresy, but that might be a question for TalkBass or the Fender Forum.

Fender Japan ought to play nice with old Fender USA, and Aerodynes are amazing basses. I have a first gen one without the Strat jack: one of the VERY few Fender P/J's that works. Also be aware that's not a photography trick; the body IS carved to an arching curve like a Les Paul.

The Aerodyne had a 20 fret neck, so you might be in luck?

I decided not to buy, I want sunburst. Thinking about this PJ body from Mark Jenny -

Yesterday I ordered that 3TS PJ body from mjtele. Spoke with Matt and he told me they have a 4lbs. ash body - that's very light and so I placed the order.

So it's going to be Jaco-style with a couple of changes - a P neck pickup (70s grey bottom) and unlined fretboard.

That's definitely on the light side for a J body, even for swamp ash.

Got some progress pics today in the mail. Now they are going to darken the exposed wood and buff it. I opted for no checking. It looks a lot like the color and wear on my '75 P (relic'ed by 40+ years of playing, 30 of which were my playing).

Received the body. Very nice and light weight. But it's drilled for a side jack. I didn't ask for that. It's visible in the secont pic but I didn't notice.

MJT offers to make me another body.

I'm not sure what to do. First, I don't want to wait another 3 months. And I don't know if I'll get a 4lbs. ash body. And I already paid a total of $183 for shipping to Israel + VAT + fees, I'll have to pay that again for another body. And I'll have to ship the current body back to the US. All that adds up to almost the cost of a new body.

Any advice? Should I just live with the side jack hole?

Come on, make fun of me for ordering a relic and complaining it's not perfect.

FYI, the very first run of Aerodynes have a side-jack. I prefer it FWIW.

What am I going to do with the 4th hole in the control plate then?
