15 Plucking Awesome Rock Guitar Ads from the 1970s-80s

I know we've seen the Ripper ad before, it's on one of Jules' sites. Most of the others are new to me since I wasn't reading guitar mags back then. The Epiphone ad is easily my favorite.

I have never seen a Ripper with 2 mudbuckers ever. Were they redesigned for the Ripper per the ad's claim?

One of those would certainly pique my interest.
Stable....for now.    www.risky-biz.com

The Ripper wasn't ready when the add was designed. So they used a prototype. Also note the different pickguard shape.

Here's another prototype with two Mudbuckers:

Tom knows what's happenin'! Love the stereotypes in the Fender Strat ad.

It weigheth - literally - a ton. They must have realized then and there that that body needed extensive routing (and a huge scratchplate to cover things up) for  the new bass model not to tank like a le(a)d zeppelin. I got it as a steal, guy didn't know what he was selling and believed the truss rod was broken (it's not, just extremely hard going).

Which reminds me  ... Did I ever mention how I personally think that that band is overrated? Shall I expound on the subject? Like now I mean?

Has anyone seen Francis Buchholz playing a Gibson Explorer bass?

Never, but that isn't claimed in the ad, Matthias Jabs is the avowed Explorer player within the Scorps and visuals-conscious as they are, you wouldn't catch him playing a Flying V either. That said, I once saw an Alembic Exploiter pre-owned by Francis Buchholz up for sale which he supposedly used on a US tour. Haven't found any pictorial evidence though.

I couldn't really see it that well because a stupid window kept popping up and obstructing the view.

Francis is a long scale man. And he likes a very focused - you could almost say typically deutsch - bass sound, he would have chucked the medium scale 80ies Gibby Exi away after one song with its flabby, weak E-string.

Plus the way Explorers were earmarked for Matthias Jabs.

Suicide bombers are going to be so disappointed when they end up getting 40 BC Rich guitars.
Contrary to what James Bond says, a good Gibson should be stirred, not shaken.

BC Rich had way tackier ads than that one, I'm kind of disappointed in their selection of the cartoon one.  The others ads were better than the sears catalog lingerie section for........nevermind.  :-\

I kinda miss the Dean Gürrrlz ...

Their inspirational effect on nascent, budding players cannot be overestimated. "If you keep on practicing those chromatic scales and the sweeping arpeggios, you too will one day have two nice nannies like them!"

Somehow I doubt that Vitas Gerulaitis (RIP) and John McEnroe played Kramers in real life.

If I remember correctly John McEnroe was a hobby guitar player even in th 80's. Swedish Mats Wilander  is also a dedicated guitarplayer in addition to being a (ex)  tennis pro and I think they used to jam sometimes or even had a brief band together. But that does'nt mean that McEnroe is a Kramer fan though.
