After 30 years or so..
« on: September 12, 2016, 12:49:27 PM »
..I finally found my second set of these.  I bought my first set at Rayburn Music in Boston in their bargain bin - which was never a bargain - and haven't been able to find another set since.  Thanks to fleabay, and looking on there for 15 years or so, I found one.  Now I have to decide which bass to stick em on.

Colour me daft, but what are they and what do they sound like? I'm curious!

Instead of a regular bass string, where you have a round wire wrapped around a thinner inner core string ( or flat metal or nylon tape around the same for flats and tapes respectively) you have an inner core of several very light strings ( like a bunch of guitar .008 or .009 strings). They have a low tension rubbery vibe and they sound a bit different but not in any bad way. They were expensive and hard to find, back when Rotos were kind of unusual vs Fender, LaBella or GHS.

I know Rotosound boss Jason How very well. He's the son of the company founder and he makes all the machines. Great guy, technical guy and he makes very strange psychedelic 60s British music haha! I can ask him about them?

I wrote to Rotosound 20 years back to ask if they still made them or had a box in a warehouse.  They sent me a letter back, and a catalog with a sticker.  I wish they'd make them again.

Sounds like an interesting design! Do they have less fundamental from having a stranded core like that?

Any other string winders doing this?

All you need to do is call yourself JAE, return from the dead, and they'd make anything to get your endorsement back... ;)
