Nice '62 EB3 on the bay
« on: August 11, 2016, 10:56:14 PM »
This one looks fine, rare to see a good one this old listed as 'EB-0'

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1962-Gibson-EBO-Bass-Guitar-/322221256962?hash=item4b05e23102:g:MP0AAOSw0UdXqN2k

If it does not skyrocket in the last minute it might be a good investment!

It does look like it has had a headstock repair, or replacement even.  The logo and crown look brandnew. And the slightly darker red finish at back of the headstock looks very high gloss. Even the tuners look new.
On my iPhone I can't see anything of this mentioned on the description.

Looks pretty original to me...including the orange silk strings.  I don't see any obvious evidence of a headstock break.  Bad digital color correction, yes.

My '65 was in almost as good condition when I got it in '06 and it lived in a chipboard case, not a deluxe like that one.

Somebody should buy it and gift it to Mike Watt.  :P

It's a beauty. Not going to be a bargain though.

Could be bad color correction at the neck/headstock area but I would want reassurance and a better closeup if I were bidding.

I'm suspicious because there isn't a shot of the back of the headstock of the area where breaks occur. That is surely bread 'n' butter stuff when selling an older Gibson bass? To my eyes, the one shot that shows the headstock bass makes it look like the finish is translucent at that point, and darker. It looks like the usual trick of using a matching solid colour to hide splines, cracks or some other repair whilst maintaining the visual integrity of that area of the neck. It doesn't even look like a good blend, starting fairly abruptly where that chip is located.

Shouldn't the crown inlay be up higher on the head?  I thought it moved to the middle position sometime in 1963.

Dang, didn't see that! My '63 have a high crown.. Didn't see anything iffy at first, but something must have been done to it!

I'm getting sloppy!

EDIT: I asked the seller, he says he is no collector and would not know about such things. He says there might have been a headstock repair, but cannot tell for sure.

He's playing dumb.
The darker red finish at the backside of the headstock
The high gloss while the body and the neck are significantly duller.
The logo and crown that haven't yellowed over the years.
The location of the crown.

All tell tale signs for a headstock repair.

That doesn't say it is a bad bass (at all). But the seller should be honest about it.

Not to mention a true 62 shouldn't have the nickel covered mudbucker.  Between that and the crown it points more to a mid-late '63 but has a '62 serial....not that you can count on Gibson's serial numbers from that era.

Either way its still a pretty bass 8)

Am I having a Senior Moment, or is there something odd with the plastic back plate?

I could be wrong but I think that's correct for the early wide spaced knob eb-3.  It is quite a bit larger than the later narrow spaced ones.

He posted detailed pics while avoiding a detailed pic of the one problem area, and now he claims ignorance by saying he's no collector? Yeah, right. If he were to add to his comments that there might be a headstock repair, then at least that would be an alert to a bidder. But he avoids mentioning that while stressing that there are no refunds.

Looking at the last picture there appears to be a crack from where the screw is missing on the G tuner across and down the neck.
