I have your bass's righty brother. I modded mine out with those Chinese Thunderbird pickups and I simplified the wiring scheme as the rotary switch was confusing me.

Slightly random thought, but I considered fitting flatwounds for the bass course and roundwounds for the octave course. Has anybody tried this before?

True, but it does help with neck dive.

I've not bothered trying to remember what all the switch positions do, I've found two that I like and haven't a clue what they actually do.

From memory it was sequences as:

Pickup 1 - both coils
Pickup 1 - single coil
Pickup 2 - both coils
Pickup 2 - single coil
Pickup 1 + 2 - both coils
Pickup 1 + 2 - single coils

It didn't make the most sense. I found that any amp or EQ setting that favoured the humbucker settings, say, would underperform with the single coils. The switch is quite a flimsy unit when you get a look under the hood, which was another motivating factor. Mine is now wired like a Telecaster.

Hagstroms do have coolness about them.

I had an HB-4 for a while - it had the 6-position switch and i couldn't invest in the brain damage needed to memorize them. As noted, only 1 or 2 of the settings sounded any good to me, but none sounded as good as anything made by Gretsch, so I sold it.
