The Outpost Cafe / Aretha Franklin / Amazing Grace
« on: May 02, 2019, 06:44:14 PM »
I just saw this doc / concert movie yesterday in our local art cinema.
It's well worth it!

The gospel choir is phenomenal.
Of course I thought there was not nearly enough screen time for the rhythm section:
Bernard Purdie, Chuck Rainey, and Cornell Dupree. But you can hear them.

The Bass Zone / Good podcast for obsessive Who / Entwistle fans
« on: April 12, 2019, 04:41:44 PM »
It's highly opinionated, so of course there's plenty of room for disagreement. I've been really enjoying season 3 of "Discography".

He covers EVERYTHING including pretty much all the solo records, so there's a fair amount of Entwistle stuff I haven't heard even after decades of being a fan. Sure, some of them sound like things I missed because they weren't very good, but I'm thinking I should check out those first couple JAE records... And maybe even one or two Daltrey releases!!

The Bass Zone / Graham Maby / Joe Jackson
« on: February 17, 2019, 09:13:32 AM »
I had the opportunity to see Joe Jackson last night on his "Four decade tour".
What a band! Versatile and rocking. They can get quite jazzy, silky smooth, latin-esque grooves, or kick ass as needed on the early tunes.
It's pretty harmonically adventurous material. Bassist Graham Maby has been with JJ since the very early days and played on pretty much any recording you may be thinking of. (My band used to cover "Is She Really Going Out with Him" and I always enjoyed the staccato verses and melodic bass licks on that one, though we gave it up because we could never get the vocal harmonies to sound good!).  One thing that was really fun was seeing how much Joe obviously enjoyed this band, whenever they really took off he'd be looking around at the other players with glee on his face. At one point he said to the audience, "People often tell me I should do a solo tour by myself, but I don't want to, it's so much more fun with a band."

Anyway, it's a very good live show if you can get a chance to see it. I believe a lot of dates are sold out though :(

I've been acquainted with current guitarist Teddy Kumpel since I was a very small child.
Teddy got me an unexpected backstage pass - as I was told to expect, Mr. Jackson did not appear backstage after the show, but I did get to hang with Teddy and reminisce about the time he was babysitting me and my sister and almost got us drowned in mud.
And - nice surprise!  I got to briefly meet and express my admiration to Mr Maby, who has a very warm and gentle presence in person, seems like a good soul.

There's various fan videos from this tour on youtube already, here's a song (from last week) that sounded great last night:

The Outpost Cafe / Old spice "guitar solo"

I gather this is old and some of you have probably seen it, but ...

And then somebody actually went and made a Bass Solo fragrance:

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Pick your metal signature set

Looks like 3 of the Big Four thrash players got excited about their hero Geezer's signature set and wanted in on the deal:
http://www.emgpickups.com/bass/signature-sets-bass.html

What would a Tom Araya signature set sound like, though?  Megadeth and Anthrax at least have pretty clearly audible bass tones; I haven't spent much time with Slayer, but what I've heard, their sound is all guitars and drums with just a hint of non-distinct low end from Araya.

Can a Trujillo signature set be far behind?

Hey, maybe there's a "Justice" special edition pickup set in the works for vintage Newsted tone - with no magnets included  ;D

The Outpost Cafe / Exploring WWII wrecks in the pacific
« on: March 14, 2018, 07:45:42 AM »
For the WWII buffs here - a friend of mine works on the Petrel, Paul Allen's ship that's been finding many long-missing WWII wrecks in the Pacific.
Their most recent find is the Lexington, which I just learned was an early carrier that was crippled by Japanese planes, then scuttled to avoid capture.
There are some amazing pictures and videos here, of many other sunk ships (and planes!) too.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Fretless conversions
« on: March 09, 2018, 07:31:53 PM »
What's a reasonable price range for converting a fretted neck to fretless?
I gather it can either by done by filing down the frets, or removing them and putting in a filler of some kind.

I've never owned a fretless, and suddenly find myself thinking about ways to get the kind I want if it's not readily available.

Playing another unfamiliar venue. Their gear page says the house cab is an Ampeg 410 HLF.  I liked the 610 version I played through last year pretty well, think it was from the same series.  Should I expect roughly similar tone?

How tight is the low E?  Does it drop like a rock below the port frequency? or can you hear all the notes all the way down?  Are some notes super boomy? Can you get a lot of mids and upper mids out of it?

The Outpost Cafe / RIP Grant Hart
« on: September 15, 2017, 09:49:16 AM »
I know this was already brought up in the pix-of-brothers thread, but thought it merits its own thread.

Husker Du was a hugely important band to me starting 30 years ago.  I think the first song of theirs I ever heard was one of Grant's best, and best remembered, songs, which latched on to me from the moment it aired late at night on MTV:

That showcases several things - Grant's great ear for melodic hooks, his voice that was could be both screamy and tuneful, his knack for writing poppy punk-ish songs that are both catchy and incredibly sad, and his utterly distinctive drumming which didn't sound or feel like any other "hardcore" drummer. He barely touched the hi-hat or toms, preferring to drive the groove from pinging steady 8ths on the ride cymbal and kick/snare backbeat that I can't quite describe the feel of. Both driving and a bit loose or floppy-sounding.

I think it's fair to say that without Husker Du there would have been no Nirvana as we knew them, and without Grant Hart there would have been no Husker Du. Any number of Grant Hart songs would not have sounded out of place on a Nirvana album; it's easy to imagine Grant singing something like "On a Plain".
Bob Mould gets more attention, and I don't want to detract from him, but Grant was hugely important and will be missed.  I'm sad I never saw him play.

Gibson Basses / Ibanez epiphone slothead?
« on: September 11, 2017, 07:15:22 AM »
I did not know this was a thing.
https://reverb.com/item/6071678-a-rare-early-1970-s-epiphone-long-scale-sg-eb-3-by-the-japanese-antoria_ibanez-fujigen-factory

So it's an Ibanez-made bass illegally using the Epiphone logo for a bass Epiphone never made? Confusing. Wonder why they didn't go all the way and use a Gibson logo!

The Outpost Cafe / Funny podcast arguing about Michael Anthony
« on: September 10, 2017, 07:56:38 PM »
My favorite light entertainment podcast lately is John Hodgman (you might know him as "PC" from the old Mac-vs-PC commercials, or as a rival character on "Bored to Death" among other minor things), acting as "fake internet judge" to settle disputes of no consequence.

One particular recent episode might amuse Bass Outpost members as it consists entirely of an argument about one bassist.
Synopsis: "Jackson brings the case against his friend, Jesse. They are at odds about the merits of Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony. Jesse insists Michael Anthony is an unsung genius. Jackson disagrees and wants to put this debate to rest. Who’s right? Who’s wrong?"

It's fun in a "passionate music fans who don't play bass arguing about bass" kind of way.
Yes, they mention the "drunk bass solo" youtube video.

Bass Amps & Effects / Ampeg BA210V2 - any experience?
« on: April 28, 2017, 06:31:58 PM »
My next gig is at small bar that has an Ampeg BA210V2 listed as their house backline amp.
I've never played through one. Anybody tried it?

The Bass Zone / Some really tasty fretless playing
« on: March 06, 2017, 07:18:01 PM »
I've been on a kick of listening to this album obsessively lately. Not everyone's cup of tea, I know. But I really like the way some of these songs feature bass as a counterpoint to the vocal.
Particularly the two with Eberhard Weber:
