Bass Amps & Effects / Orange Terror amp
« on: July 29, 2014, 08:44:25 PM »
I decided to start a new thread for the deserving Terror head.  I have the 1000 watt version and it's a brute.  I took the ExFactor and Hofner Club to practice tonight and all went well.  Both basses performed well with the amp.  The ExFactor was huge in active mode.  The Club was great too.  Gone was the woofing mud I had with the Mesa.  The Club ended up being my fave.  It was bassy, hollowish and clear.  I really liked the tone and sound of it.

Bass Amps & Effects / Marshall Super Bass amp
« on: July 17, 2014, 05:09:27 AM »
I thought I'd start a new thread since my last one wandered all over the place.  Well, I took the SB amp to practice last night and it surprised me.  Nothing like the Prodigy.  It's clean and clear, and can be jangly like Scott said.  But you can dial in the bass, set the mids and trebles at 12 o'clock and the presence and gain to a point it has that old timey warmth and slight bit of distortion I remember as a teen.  The tone is so much more pleasing to my ear than the Mesa.

Other positives:  no big delays in attack, it's right on, the way I like it; no woofing or mushiness;  tons of power, nothing lacking there.  It's not an easy amp to dial in.  With separate presence and volume/gain controls, it's got a learning curve.  This one was modded with a master volume on the back so you can jumper the first and second channels and then you plug your input into channel 1 and you can mix in the gains for both bright and normal channels at once.  Kind of complicated for a simple bass dude like me, but I'm working on learning how to make it work.  I could always have it put back to normal by my tech, but may not need to.  It sounds most like my B-15 and I do like the sound a lot so far.

My band mates really liked the sound, that's always a plus too.  So, it looks like I'll be experimenting with this and the Orange 1000 for the next few weeks.

Bass Amps & Effects / Rethinking things.......
« on: June 26, 2014, 05:16:46 AM »
Being the capricious gear whore that I am, I know I am prone to switch at a moment's notice on things.  I have however come to some conclusions about amps.  There are so many variables, one cannot control for all possible contingencies.  One just tries to adapt.

My current dilemma, my Mesa Prodigy is a great amp, but I can't get it to perform the way I want it to.  Many folks probably can I'm sure, but after months of trying, I can't seem to dial it in to meet the demands of the tone my brain seeks out and situation I play in routinely.  Part of the problem is the crappy acoustics of our club.  The other is the nature of this all tube amp.  I want deep rich lows, but get a delayed, indistinct boomy output when I try to dial that in.  When I go for cleaner, less boomy, the bass end leaves me wanting more.

My Hofner Club sounds like total crap through the amp no matter how I set things up.  In fact, all of my hollow bodies suck through this rig.  It could also be the speakers in combination with this amp, although they sound great with other amps.

So, I borrow an Orange Terror 1000 from the shop to try out and wow, I was amazed.  Deep rich lows, no boominess, sharp quick attack, the gain control warmed it up nicely, the speakers were cranking out a distinct warm bass that sounded great in our mix and hit that undefinable sweet spot in my twisted 60's brain.  Man I was bummed and pleased at the same time.  The sound was very close to my little B-15 rig.

So, it's gonna be solid state with a tube preamp for awhile.  I am gonna take my B-15 and the Marshall Super Bass in as well to do some comparisons.  I'll bore you all with my thoughts on that over the next couple weeks!   8)

Bass Amps & Effects / Custom bass head question
« on: June 13, 2014, 06:41:00 AM »
If you could have any vintage bass amp head recreated by a custom amp builder, which one would it be?  Why?  I know it may be impossible to exactly replicate anything from the past, but I'm curious to see what you guys would like if you were to go this route.

Rickenbacker Basses / Early 4003 necks
« on: May 09, 2014, 06:30:44 AM »
I remember reading some time ago that the earlier 4003 basses (late 80's) had slimmer necks without the volute the current ones have.  Is that true, Ric experts?

Other Bass Brands / Kubicki basses
« on: May 08, 2014, 05:47:29 AM »
I've been pondering a Kubicki bass for some time.  I love the look, really different and out there, but have never had the chance to play one.  Anyone here know anything about them?  The neck looks nice and slim, which is  requisite for me.  I was also wondering how the hopped up electronics might work with my all tube Mesa rig.

Just curious!

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Great band saw deal
« on: April 08, 2014, 07:06:19 AM »
I've been trolling around for a better band saw and Woodcraft just put one that I was considering on sale.  They knocked off $180 and it's going for $419.  It's a Rikon with good reviews.  Just thought I'd share!  I'd love a heavier duty saw, but this price point works for me.

Stay tuned.  More to come soon.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Gibson NR round over
« on: February 22, 2014, 03:08:32 PM »
Hey Scott, what size round over did Gibson use on the NRs?

It's been months since I tore my shop up to do a redesign of it.  Now, it's almost all back together and I'm making some forms to build the sides on my basses.  I'm going with the one design for now and I'm going to try a acoustic version with bent wood sides and a solid body model.

Here's the design....

And the forms I made this week.......

I'm trying a new, bendable wood for guitar sides, I'll post more on that when it arrives.

Other Bass Brands / Another Guild reissue
« on: January 07, 2014, 08:12:16 AM »
At least they are trying!  I was chatting with Curt from the HOG yesterday and he said he got a notice that Guild is coming out with M-85 reissues, made overseas at an MSRP of $1200.  I assume it will be from the same factory as the Starfire reissue.  Gonna stop in there tomorrow to see the info he has on it.  At least when Guild does a reissue, it's pretty darn close to the original, at least cosmetically and hardware wise.  I think the weakness of the Starfire is in the pickup and the poly finish.  The rest of it is pretty darn nice.

Gibson Basses / Gibson pickup flaw
« on: December 13, 2013, 12:01:58 PM »
OK, I'm into my second Midtown with the LP model and I'm having the same problem with the neck pup.  The output of the neck pup is decidedly lower on the e-string compared to the other 3.  Even the guys in the band noticed it at practice the other night.  I had this issue with the first one, my cherry finish model and now the LP is doing the same thing.  I tried rounds, flats, silk/no silk on the ball end and nothing helps.  How can Gibson make a bass neck pup that sucks ass on the e-string????  I am sorely disappointed and bummed.   I really like this bass!! >:(

Rickenbacker Basses / Somebody stop me!!!!
« on: December 10, 2013, 12:20:47 PM »
There's an 80's Hamburg model that I am nanoseconds away from buying.  I have always wanted one of these and I know it's not worth $1200, but I still want one.  Geez……... :P
