The Outpost Cafe / It's back...
« on: April 27, 2015, 07:12:34 PM »
I didn't think I'd have to write this but my cancer has returned.  I had 3 years and 3 months of glorious normalcy.  I'm really blessed again as it's very early and only in one lymph node.  I'm waiting to hear from Johns Hopkins regarding the best treatment.  Overall, it could have been horribly worse, so I'm feeling really good about the circumstances.  Keep me in your thoughts and prayers!

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / A couple basses finally ready
« on: April 23, 2015, 12:48:50 PM »
I've sent one bass off for finishing.  This one will be vintage white as I'm not that happy with scraps I used to piece it together.  Will have a matching headstock on a maple board.

The full hollow body will go in next.  It's almost finished.  Got the mahogany neck glued in, turned out nice.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Pressing project
« on: March 16, 2015, 07:29:34 AM »
While doing up the recent bass bodies, I got really weary of clamping the bodies up with a gazillion clamps and doing it twice, once for the front and again for the back.  So, I built a press for doing the bodies and developed a method, ala Gibson, using 1/4" wood pins to align the top and bottom wood to the sides/center block piece.  Then, I can just make a sandwich of the 3 pieces, put it in the press, tighten things down and we're done.  I could even fit two sandwiches in the press at once if I had to.  This is going to be a lot easier on down the road.  I thought about building this a couple years ago and just never got around to it.  It will be handy for numerous gluing projects.

I used the threaded rods so I can adjust the height for thicker projects.  I don't have any in mind right now, but you never know!

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Mighty Mite finish

Anyone know what kind of finish Mighty Mite puts on their necks?  I've been all over their site and they don't say.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Ah, Pandora's box....
« on: February 24, 2015, 08:44:21 AM »
OK, the jack on my Kubicki has been acting up.  The problem with the though-body jacks is their enclosed case.  You can't tighten up the plug clip when it gets stretched.  I like using them, but they do wear out.  Of course, I decided to check it out and several fun things appear.  First, the electronics, ala NASA, are crammed into the cavity with zero tolerance.  I had to remove all of the circuitry guts just to get at the bottom of the jack.  The guess what, one of the jack wires broke off the circuit board (a tad brittle after 20+ years).  Not a big deal, just annoying.

So, I ordered a new through-body stereo jack.  It needed it anyway.  When it arrives, I'll be back asking for pointers on wiring my first ever stereo jack.  I'll probably go with new wires for the jack to circuit board run.

The biggest pisser about this is I was going to take it to practice tomorrow.  Oh well!  :-[

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Next step
« on: February 10, 2015, 07:49:56 AM »
OK folks, I need some advice.  I am going to have 3 basses ready to sell in a week or two.  What should I do in terms of increasing my presence online?  Should I do a web site?  Anyone know if the free ones are any good?  I'd like to use eBay as a convenient way to get the basses out there to a national audience and then move away from that eventually.  I want to include sound samples but I don't think that's possible on eBay auction ads and listing other web sites is verboten too, IIRC.

So, just for fun, what would you do?  I'm open to any and all advice.

Gibson Basses / What do I have?
« on: November 18, 2014, 12:14:55 PM »
I can't remember where or when I got this TR cover.  Anyone know what TB it might have come from?  It's a little larger than the new ones.  Getting old is a pain in the rear!

Saw Doyle Dykes in concert this weekend.  Sure wish I could play like that...........He currently reps for Guild guitars and tours solo.  He can pick any style.  He played some old Les Paul songs...unreal.

Rickenbacker Basses / I'm back...
« on: November 05, 2014, 02:44:09 PM »
Well, after considering another RIC and looking at the neck issue (thanks to everyone here who gave me pointers on vintage and contemporary 4003/1 necks), I decided I still wanted one in my collection.  So, while at the HOG today I asked what they had and low and behold, they had a FireGlo and JetGlo.  I decided what the heck, I do miss my first RIC, a Fireglo.  So, here she is.  And, very beautiful with the walnut wings on the headstock and the dark/light streaks on the fret board.  Very cool bass.  While the neck is still a little bit much for me, the electronics on RICs are fantastic IMHO.

Bass Amps & Effects / Mesa M-Pulse 600
« on: September 26, 2014, 11:06:46 AM »
Well, this might be my last "in search of that tone" post I'll do for awhile.  Having rediscovered the Scout last week, I found a like new M-Pulse 600 and made a low ball offer (these things were over $1300 new) and got it!  It's the big brother of the Scout, and I have come to realize that these amps are real gems and some of the best I've heard from Mesa.  If you've never tried one of these, you should.  Great hybrid performers and it's a shame they are discontinued now.  But I have 2 of them so I'm happy!   8)

Ironically, the first amp I tried when I decided to move up to gigging years ago was an M-Pulse 600 combo.  I wanted that amp so bad, but at the time thought it was too expensive and settled for the Scout.  The headroom and depth of the bass on an M-Pulse amp is incredible.  I should have gone there a year ago, but just didn't really consider it. Now I have the best of both amps!

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Painting in a winter wonderland
« on: September 23, 2014, 11:51:54 AM »
Well, I hated the results I was getting with hand finishing.  So, I stopped trying that and finally decided to bite the bullet and build a portable spray booth for indoors.  The weather here sucks from November to March and that's just too much time to lose for building and finishing.  My barn is too big to heat and I like being in the house during the winter months anyway.  So, I built a 36" x 32" box, 24" deep.  I'm trying a 1300 cfm blower, in reverse, for my air removal source.  I'll install a removable high efficiency furnace filter under it before use.  Total cost thus far is about $50 in MDF and pieces from my scrap pile.  $85 for the blower and that's about it except for some wood screws and glue.  If this blower doesn't do it, I might opt to convert a used dust removal blower.  We'll see.  I don't know why I didn't try this sooner.  I have 2 basement windows, so there will be no problem venting to the outside.  Should be able to test in out in a few days.

Bass Amps & Effects / Mesa 400+

So, I know some of you have had or have one.  Tell me what you think of them.  The chat on Talkbass is pretty positive.  What do you folks think???

Bass Amps & Effects / Peavey VB-2
« on: September 09, 2014, 05:42:16 PM »
Is it really as good as some folks say it is?  My experience with a new tube amp turned out unsatisfying.  I ended up with a woofing indistinct sound.  Would this be the case with the amp too or do the "clean gain" and "resonance" controls help eliminate some of the woofiness?

Bass Amps & Effects / Pedal recommendations
« on: August 22, 2014, 09:55:18 AM »
I've never had, or thought about, using pedals with my rig.  However, in my quest for deep throbbing bass (excuse the shades of gray innuendo), is there a pedal I could employ that would help me deepen/improve the low end on my rig?  I'm not looking for overdriven stuff, just a fatter, rounder bass response.  I'm finding just turning up the bass control and backing down on the mids and trebles often makes things muffled and indistinct.  My biggest problem is we are a 3 piece band and I need a lot of low end to fill the gaps and I'm not quite there yet.

Just wondering.............
