20 odd years ago I was in a non-serious car accident that still ended up wrenching my back and neck pretty well. I've had lower back issues ever since, along with some limited range of motion issues in my neck and sporadic tingles in my left leg and arm (not the Chris Matthews kind). I had great meds for four years and they were a godsend because they eliminated all my symptoms and made normal life possible, but once doctors started getting weird about writing that prescription I just said screw it and got used to the pain.

Over the years I've mostly chalked all this up to the aches and pains of getting older, but about four months ago I woke up with my left arm tingling and half of my left hand (from outside middle to pinkie finger) weak and numb. Long story short, the doc thinks it's nerve and possibly disc issues in my neck. PT didn't help so next up is probably an MRI and then who knows. In the meantime, I can't really play at all. All the strength and dexterity in those fingers is gone. As good as he was, I've now developed an even greater respect for Django Reinhardt 'cause I just can't do it with two fingers...

It's gonna suck if I have to sell basses to pay for that MRI. That being said, I'm grateful for my overall health because other than that, it's pretty good. I hope you guys that are going through health or other stuff (some we know of, some we don't) get through it all with your life and humor intact. It's hard to be cheerful when you feel like sh*t. Lean on your loved ones and be grateful for what you have, my friends.

Gene usually goes in the Gibson forum, but, but, that bass doesn't look like a Gibson!

Ex Rainbow singer Joe says axe icon Ritchie “deserves to go out in big blaze of glory” - and aims to get results from meeting this month

Joe Lynn Turner claims former bandmate Ritchie Blackmore wants to return to rock music – and says the guitarist deserves the acclaim that’s waiting for him if he does. ...

Now the singer tells Rockin’ Metal Revival: “I’ve been in touch with Ritchie’s camp. Hopefully we’ll get something a little bit further in the talks in December. Now is the time – 2015. Everybody’s sitting there waiting for this to happen.”

Turner reports he’s had positive reactions from industry bodies including Live Nation and Universal Music Group and adds: “All we need is the nod from Richie to say, ‘I’m ready to of it.’”

I had to drop by a guitar shop the other day and my almost 9 year old caught a case of love at first sight. Made birthday shopping easier though... And now we both get to learn uke!

The Outpost Cafe / Spitfire Footage Years Later
« on: January 20, 2014, 03:31:34 PM »
Scott posted this on Facebook earlier today and I thought some of you guys might like it too. There's about 20 seconds where the guy explains transferring this footage to "modern digital media" and it stood out because that's my line of work. The interview that follows is really cool. I can't embed this clip but it's worth the click. That took some big stones to fly alone and unarmed over Berlin.

Thanks, Scott!

The Outpost Cafe / Looking For Advice From the Recording/Audio Gurus Here
« on: December 02, 2013, 08:17:41 PM »
Hey guys, I realize this is a long shot but I'm looking for advice on some technical issues I'm having with some old recordings and I know next to nothing about this end of making music.

My old band recorded these tracks on a 1/4" Fostex 8 track in 1989/90. I recently had them digitized and have discovered these sort of squeaking sounds that pop up intermittently on different tracks. I'm not sure what they are or how they got there but I don't think they're part of the digitizing process (and they weren't there 23 years ago). I've clipped a few examples here. Any ideas out there on what might have caused these or anything I can do to remove the offending squeaks while keeping the rest of the audio in tact?

Some might call this project a hobby, others would say it’s an obsession. A 96 year-old man spent an entire 15 years hand-creating a model town that is so large and so detailed, you won’t be able to believe that only one man was responsible for it. Some labors of love border on the insane.

There aren't tons of songs but there are some pretty cool tracks. I love hearing how different and imperfect some tracks sound on their own, yet once you layer the other stuff over it everything blends and sounds perfect. Our ears play amazing tricks on us (well, mine do on me). Hearing (somewhat) individual tracks brings out some cool bits and colors you may not have noticed before.

The Bass Zone / Would You Choose Either of These?
« on: March 02, 2013, 07:24:17 PM »
I know these things are subjective but I thought I'd ask anyway. I'm trying to sell a cabinet I never use anymore (Avatar Delta B212 for $225) and a guy contacted me about trading for one of two basses.

Squier Short Scale Jaguar (Duncan Basslines Bridge pickup and a KSM bridge) or...

Gretsch Electromatic 2202 (black, with KSM bridge and a TKL hard case, he also said it's one of the older ones).

The stock Squier sells for $180 at MF. The newer Gretsch 2210 (looks to be the newer model of the 2202) sells for $244 (no idea what the older one sold for).

I figure at a minimum either of these could be a good started bass in case one of my boys shows interest, but I have no experience with either one. There are some threads here that extoll both basses for the money but I thought I'd ask anyway. Is one far better quality than the other? I don't need another bass, but I don't need the cabinet either and at least the bass might be of use. Any thoughts?

Some of these are disturbingly amazing.

I tried to buy this bird in 1993 but a friend got there first. I got it from him a year later and it's been with me ever since. I think it was black originally, but the refin was old in '93, as was the bridge mod. Not long after I discovered various bass fora online I formulated a simple plan but never got around to gathering the parts to execute it. Until now.

I've had the Badbird and DrBassman tail piece set aside for this, but Carlo helped me gather the other part of the puzzle with a new set of 66 Thunderbuckers.

Stay tuned...
