Fender Basses / MOVED: Working up my first build

This topic has been moved to Bill's Shop. After posting I realized it would be more appropriate there.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Working up my first build
« on: August 06, 2020, 03:20:01 PM »
17 years ago I bought a pink paisley P for Aussie Mark (I think the seller wouldn't ship internationally). I really liked it at the time (played it at home for a few days before taking it apart and sending it to Australia), but moved on once it was gone. Then over the years, whenever I saw a SCPB like those I'd GAS for it, but never pulled the trigger. I almost got a Squier Vintage one (the Mary Kay looking ones), but I could never get past the necks looking so white (or the other models that looked too orange). So I have finally decided to build one.

I bought a MIM Fender replacement neck that's perfect, and I have an alder body coming from Guitar Mill and have a can or two of Fiesta Red from Reranch in the garage. Other than the fake neck wear, I'm hoping to end up with something like the one below.

Anyone have experience with the split coil Lindy Fralin '51 P pickup? On paper it looks like exactly what I want (planning on the 5% overwound), but I'm totally open to suggestions. I'm not looking to do an exact clone, but I want the look and flavor while having a great sounding P bass.

Fender Basses / Squier Classic Vibe 60s Fretless Jazz Bass
« on: August 06, 2020, 02:55:37 PM »
I just picked up one of these from a local shop. My 13 year old started playing bass a few months ago (also plays trombone and mandolin) and the other night he told me he had been researching Jazz basses online. I took him out yesterday and we made the rounds to multiple shops, playing various MIM and Japanese Fenders, Squiers, and a Music Man Sterling StingRay, which was the hands down winner of the day until we saw this (Squier Classic Vibe 60s Jazz). My son was actually happier that it was fretless, and it sings and barks like a Jazz Bass should.

Honestly, I was amazed by the quality and sound. It has a set of D'Addario XL rounds and a great setup, so from the first note it felt and sounded great. I didn't ask them whether it was new or used (not marked as either), but the only thing missing was the pickup stickers, so I figure maybe it was a quick return because it looks brand new. The Indian Laurel fingerboard did look unappealing to me on first glance (too light and stripey), but a good rub with oil darkened it right up when we got home. We'll just oil it now and then until it stays that way. :)

I was never really drawn to fretless electrics, but this one really impressed me. If your budget can handle the higher priced Fenders or clones, then obviously you might prefer one. But I wouldn't hesitate to use this bass (if my son lets me!) for any performance or session where I thought a fretless might do the trick.

I hope this is the right forum to ask you guys this question. I just got an acoustic bass in today. I can't justify the cost of a Thunderchief, but this import little brother looked like it might work. As soon as it came in I threw some flats on it and it sounds great. But... While changing strings I noticed a slight ripple in the top on either side of the bridge. After looking closer, I can see and feel that these ripples follow the bracing inside. The whole thing feels solid and is holding the tune just fine, but I've never owned an acoustic bass, and none of my flat top acoustics have ever been uneven on the top, so I don't know if this is a problem or not.

The two photos with the black lines are my bass, trying to point out what I'm seeing/feeling. The other is the same model, but one the CME was or is selling (I got mine off someone else on Reverb). For any of you who may be familiar with these things, is this something I should worry about and possibly return, or is this normal/acceptable?

The Bass Zone / Quarantine Sessions

My old bandmates and I were planning on meeting last weekend to track a few more songs for the album we've been slowly working on, but you know what happened to those plans... So we got our old drummer (from 1988) to play along and got our phones out to record one of our old songs. We have a bunch more in the pipeline now. Most fun I've had in ages! You guys should do the same (solo or otherwise) and let's see what everyone is up to.

I'm familiar with the band name but wouldn't have recognized the guy. That said, this does not surprise me at all. As long as you can sell all those lawyer bursts, right?

The Bass Zone / It's a bass, it's a guitar...
« on: September 29, 2017, 02:14:48 PM »

This guy has some great videos but most of them are guitar-centric, so I've never posted them here. This one kind of bridges the gap, so what the heck.

And I don't know what he does for a living, but his amp collection is insane.

Again, this one is guitar, but with all the talk we do about wood and tone, I thought it fitting (though not nearly as funny as Dave's clip).

He's talking about the guitars so I guess it's "off topic." Make sure closed captioning is on.

Gibson Basses / When You Record With Your Gibsons...
« on: April 11, 2017, 10:55:15 PM »
I've been recording with my SB-400 and right now it's my favorite sounding bass when it's solo'd, but overall, all that character and grind sounds pretty woolly and indistinct in a raw mix. Not sure if I'll be able to eq it enough to be heard without overwhelming the rest of the mix (the songs are more poppy and singer/songwriterish than all out rock). If my bandmates and I are happy with these recordings we'll pay to have them mixed by someone who knows what he's doing, but I'm curious as to how you guys approach recording your mahogany Gibsons. Do I have to run through glowing tubes in order to hear this thing in the (recorded) mix?

The Bass Zone / Hofner Questions
« on: December 11, 2016, 08:25:20 PM »
I've been wanting to try one of the lower end Hofner Club basses and thought I'd ask in case you guys have any experience with them. I know the Contemporary has a block and the others don't. The cheaper ones on eBay seem to have all sorts of names but besides that, I don't know if one is better than the other or how to tell (Icon, Ignition, B, BC, HI).

I know the Contemporary isn't going to sound exactly like a full hollowbody but I'm leaning toward it anyway just because it seems like that one is pretty good quality. Also, is there a cheap model besides the Contemporary that has neck binding? I ask because I'm seeing some with gold Hofner decals on the back of the headstock and some without (all listed as Contemporary or HCT and at similar price points).

So after all that, my questions are: Are all the Contemporary Clubs the same (other than finish), and, if not, what are those differences and which one would you recommend (or not)?
