What this Les Paul bass?

A custom job perhaps, with those pickup positions?

Larry Johnson (yes, not Graham, or Louis Johnson) plays a 4001 (sounds like it has the cap).

I was born ready!    ;D

So this isn't a custom-shop rarity but a bass made by Bionic-Joe?

So, it's a Hamer neck and Thunderbird wings? From a Chaparral bass? I had the same done 'cause I hated the bodystyle and it being a CH-12 I wasn't destroying any expensive USA Hamer. My friend bult me a B12S style body and after some pickup experiments it now looks like this:

The neck was sawed off and glued to the new body. The original was some very light and soft wood, the new is alder and it resonates much better. Dives like hell but I'm somehow used to it with these kind of instruments. Might explain why Hamer offers this bodystyle only in short and mediumscale versions...

I'm planning to do a similar thing with the Hagström lurking behind, maybe a Swede styled body. It has a bolt-on neck so the whole project would be much easier.

Have to think about the doubleneck BC Rich of Derek Smalls. Two similar necks, no use, so brilliant:D

But the other neck was an 8-string, if you mean that "Big Bottom" bass.

The other day I saw a photo of Entwistle playing a Ric. Was that before he switched to the P?

Was it this?

...or this?

Here's the best (or at least I haven't found better) site about John's gear through the years:

Interesting front pup on that Jazz.

Yeah, it's a mudbucker. It also has a P-pickup in place of the front Jazz PU and did I mention that I'd love to know how it was wired? Probably stereo (check out the following from 1:22 onwards)

They virtually lived there... ;)

Yes indeed, you could hardly tell the audience from the band... ;)

The Young Vic gig on the "Who's Next" deluxe was recorded in April the 26th 1971 which was the final "Lifehouse" concert. The first one was in January that year.

They played quite a lot at the Young Vic at spring '71. Here's a pic from there with the T-bird and Hiwatts:

My guess is he used the Precision first and then switched to Thunderbirds. The bass sounds different than on "Live At Leeds" or "Isle Of Wight" or any other from 1970 when he used that same rig with a Precision bass.

Entwistle had a non-reverse Thunderbird (as seen in the above photo).
Check out this clip to see the video from that picture...

I believe it was then painted red where you can see him play it during Won't Get Fooled Again (Top of the Pops).

He had the red NR already in 1971, as seen on these pics:
http://www.bobking.com.au/details.php?p_id=27&listid=1&slistid=&seo=The_Who&menuid=&submenuid=

Also, that "Won't Get Fooled Again" TOTP clip is also from 1971. Didn't he bought the whole lot of NR 'Birds from Manny's and dismantled them for parts for Fenderbirds (the hardware)?

And how about the Hiwatt/Thunderbird transition rig used at the Young Vic shows in the spring '71? You can hear this combination on the deluxe 2CD edition of "Who's Next" and it sounds great to these ears.

Sorry for digging up old threads but I couldn't resist.

Some great names mentioned (like the underrated Johnny Gus above) and I'm sure my list wouldn't look too different:

Lately (the last 4 years...), I've been shamelessly copying the licks and the style of the late great Doug Rauch. Not underrated, just too unknown, he was funky!

All these years I've always thought it sounded like a Ric.

Some of the pics (the front cover for example) are from "Burn" tour and the album was compiled from recordings made in the spring of '75.

Weren't all his early ones made by Jol Dantzig at Hamer?

This doesn't look like a Hamer to me.

Small world department: I'm sure some of you remember MPU (Marko Ursin) from the old Pit. That's who will be building the pickups for Pekka. I saw a thread Marko started at the Pickup Makers Forum.

Actually no. Marko did start the thread at the Pickup Makers Forum just to help me to get info since he was registered there and he also built the bass which will be the "final home" of the pickups but the actual building job for which this thread will be a tremendous help
(thanks and bows to everyone involved) will land to Rami Hakala, www.mikkihouse.fi.
