The Bass Zone / Motorpsycho
« on: June 23, 2013, 03:43:45 AM »
Here's a great live video from 2008, dig Bent Saether's amazing playing and sound:

The song is from one of their best albums "Little Lucid Moments" (2008). Any other Motorpsycho fans here? I've been a fan since 2000's "Let Them Eat Cake". A much more mellow album of psychedelic pop but then again the band has never been a one-dimensional unit.

Great news as I have always wanted to hear the live recordings from the 1974 line-up that had Barry De Souza and Malando Gasama on drums and Janne Schaffer on guitar alongside Robinson and Gustafson.

This is very interesting:

Anything with the Gus on bass is always interesting to me, not to mention Paul Buckmaster and Peter Robinson.

Guitars Etc. / A sheet metal guitar
« on: May 15, 2013, 01:50:50 AM »
My friend Ville Tyyster has made a guitar that has a hollow body made of sheet metal. It has an inner pickup in addition of two normal pickups and the inner PU produces a dobro-like sound when plugged into an amp and an acoustic guitar -like tone when plugged direct.
https://sites.google.com/site/tyysterinkitarat/

The sound samples 1-6 were recorded using a 70's Vibrolux and a Shure 57 and all the tone shaping was made by using the guitar controls (volume, pickup selectors and tone). Samples 7-9 were recorded direct to the board with EQ flat. You can trust me, I was there! :)

The Bass Zone / Zappa live 1978 w/two bassists
« on: April 02, 2013, 02:14:43 AM »
Frank's live ensemble featured two bass players for a short while in the fall 1978 and here's a nice video featuring both Arthur Barrow and Patrick O'Hearn. Great organ solo from Tommy Mars and he also uses the EML Electrocomp synth and isn't that a Polybox near it?

Of all Zappa's bassists my favourites are Patrick O'Hearn, Scott Thunes and Tom Fowler. Who are yours?

The Bass Zone / New band photos
« on: February 28, 2013, 07:19:35 AM »
Arranging a photo shoot is always a drag so what's a better way to get them than asking a photographer to come to the rehearsals. We did just that and the pics turned out rather good.:)

The Bass Zone / Synthesizers
« on: February 17, 2013, 10:09:09 AM »
Any other analog synth fans? Here's my gear:

Yamaha CS01, Yamaha CS-5 and a Sonosaur bass pedal synth (Ric bass and DSOTM marble are for some extra prog appeal...). OK, not completely analog, CS01 has a digital oscillator and Sonosaur has two DCO's but filters are analog on those two also. Pretty basic stuff but they sound good, especially the CS01 has a great PWM and all are good for playing bass lines.

Gibson Basses / Gibson Triumph soundclips
« on: February 15, 2013, 11:22:09 PM »
I have my friends early seventies Triumph in the house and did some sound samples of different pickup and tone combinations for another friend. Never played or even seen another Triumph, this one is dark brown and sounds like this (all with three tone switch positions, impedance on "HI" and bass & treble controls on ten):

Neck PU:

Both:

Bridge PU:

Out of phase:

The Bass Zone / The best John Wetton Precision/Hiwatt sound
« on: November 13, 2012, 03:09:58 AM »
My favourite was always "Easy Money" from Zurich 11/15/1973 but I think this is even better:

It's a soundboard recording that's not properly mixed but at least we can hear the bass in it's monstrous glory.

The Bass Zone / Soundgarden
« on: November 10, 2012, 03:08:17 AM »
The new album is coming out next week and I've heard that it's a logical continuation of "Down On The Upside" which is a good thing for me since it's my favourite. I especially like Ben Shepherd's and Matt Cameron's more experimental stuff on it.

Any fans?

The Bass Zone / Wigwam: Being (A Finnish progrock classic from 1974)
« on: October 21, 2012, 11:14:53 PM »
If I recall correctly here are few other progressive rock fans besides me and some of you might have not heard the album mentioned above so...

Wigwam was/is a legendary Finnish band founded in the late '60s and while they had many different line-ups and albums of many styles I'd like to introduce their the most progressive period masterpiece. The band at the time comprised of

from left:
Ronnie Österberg: drums
Jukka Gustavson: vocals, organ, piano, synth
Jim Pembroke: vocals, piano
Pekka Pohjola: bass, violin

A virtuoso organist/composer and bassist/composer, an eccentric english singer/songwriter and an drummer who kept the bands feet on the ground. "Being" was a concept album mainly composed by Jukka Gustavson and while it was misunderstood at some corners being a left-wing album it critisised all politics and religion. It was definitely "in" for an artist to be a left-winger at the time in Finland and some of the lyrics by Gustavson were even censored by the left-wing record company.

Crisader (Jukka Gustavson)

Planetist (Pekka Pohjola)

Prophet (Jukka Gustavson)/Marvelry Skimmer (Jim Pembroke)

I had read about this album since I bought the first cd reissue of Quatermass' debut album (1990 Repertoire Ger) but heard it only today. John Gustafson plays bass on at least one track and sings on a few. This track has an almost heavy metal feel, could have been played by some '80s or '90s band. Written by Janne Schaffer:

This song was written by Gustafson and he definitely plays the bass on it:

The song reminds me of a Jesus Christ Superstar album.

Gustafson did another session in Sweden and the album featured the whole then current Quatermass line-up which also backed Shawn Phillips on tour.

The Bass Zone / Ike White with Greg Errico and Doug Rauch
« on: August 29, 2012, 09:21:16 PM »
I read that Ike White's "Changing' Times" (1976) was made in prison. Whatever, it was produced by Greg Errico and on this (and some other songs too) he plays with the late Doug Rauch on bass. Very funky and not unlike Sly's "In Time".

The Bass Zone / Free "Pop Chronik" 2LP featuring Andy Fraser's Toby
« on: June 27, 2012, 01:27:17 AM »
Got this today from http://www.schallplattenladen.com/en/home/:

Almost like 1973 released "The Free Story" with a slightly different tracklist. The biggest difference is that the album has Toby's version of "Travelling Man" from 1971, probably by a mistake. The rumour has it that the first German pressing of "The Free Story" has it too so maybe they used those tapes accidentaly.

Anyway, it's rather good. Andy sounds like a very young man he was at that time and curiously a bit like Steve Marriot on "Lazy Sunday".:) The bass playing is superb and the outro is longer than on Free's version with a bass solo!

I'd love to hear the rest of Toby tapes they made in 1971 but apparently Andy has blocked their release since they weren't featured on the "Songs Of Yesterday" box.

Other Bass Brands / Mont Campbell's mystery bass
« on: June 09, 2012, 12:53:21 AM »
Mont who? The great Egg and National Health bassist/composer of course, goes by the name of Dirk Campbell nowadays. Anyway, the only pic I found is rather small:

Any ideas of the bass? Maybe something of an UK origin?
