The Outpost Cafe / New (almost) comphrehensive Alex Harvey box
« on: March 22, 2016, 06:05:09 AM »
Any fans? I love his work and the just released 14CD "The Last Of The Teenage Idols" box was an auto-buy. Includes everything SAHB released plus great bonustracks (single B-sides and outtakes from the "Live" album) and most of his solo work pre- and post- SAHB.

Rickenbacker Basses / 4002 samples
« on: March 14, 2016, 10:05:07 PM »
I just realised I've never heard a sound of a Rickenbacker 4002. If anyone has any good samples or links please post!

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Tele with a bridge PU
« on: March 11, 2016, 06:11:51 AM »
I decided to mod my Tyyster Telecaster bass with a bridge pickup. I will never sell it, the original sound (the front pickup only) is still available and the original luthier did the job plus it's my bass.

With the scratchplate:

Haven't decided with which look is better. The "plain Bain" or with the plate (or guard). Anyway, it sounds really good. Here's a Jeff Beckish riff I recorded straight to the desk:

The pickup is a slightly wider version of the normal SCPB. When both pickups are on they are in series. There's something in the sound that reminds me of a Ric and I also did a comparison with a Jazz Bass ( JV Squier with Dimarzio DP123 pickups) :

The Tele sounds more arrogant, a bit more throaty. The bridge pickup is approximately in the 70's Jazz position.

The Bass Zone / Saunders' strange bass
« on: December 02, 2015, 07:13:41 AM »
It's there on a back cover of Jan Hammer Group w/Jeff Beck "Live"). Is it the piccolo bass Fernando sometimes used (for example on the song "Oh Yeah?"). Any info?

A brilliant album. Tony Smith is the most underrated and also best drummer from the fusion era. Beats Cobham and Walden if you ask me.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Wiring diagram for Aria sb-900
« on: August 13, 2015, 09:14:11 PM »
Has anybody got a wiring diagram for '81 (or newer) Aria SB-900? My friend got one with all the guts out and needs a bit help.

The Bass Zone / Geddy whips them out!
« on: May 11, 2015, 12:45:40 PM »
Rush is back on tour and it seems Geddy is using a lot of basses from his ever expanding collection. There's many Jazz Basses, a Precision, a 4080/12 Rick for "Xanadu" and even a pink Paisley Tele. And a non-reverse II.

Just listening to this great pre-"Who's Next" gig and marvelling at Entwistle's sound. Non-reverse and the Hiwatt rig sounds great, it's not as dark sounding as his T-bird & Sunn rig a bit later (I like that too). Lot's of great songs they were soon about to drop from the set such as "Pure And Easy" and "Too Much Of Anything" and I even like "Water" here even if it's a plodding hippie rock number that does the band injustice. :)

With this in the background I was wondering if Entwistle used Hiwatts in the "Who's Next" studio sessions too or did he acquire the Sunn gear for those? The sessions started in May '71 and all the pics I've seen from the "Who's Next" tour have the Sunn  rig.
Never seen any pics from the studiosessions 'though. Entwistle's recollections vary about the basses he used (P or Thunderbird) but a lot of the tracks sound like T-Bird to me when compring to his earlier Precision work. "Going Mobile" for example is a very clear T-Bird.

There's a pic from The Young Vic in the liner notes of "Who's Next" deluxe 2CD which is dated the 5th of May 1971 and shows Entwistle playing a P-Bass through the Hiwatts but the dating is incorrect (it's from 11/15/1970). The 4/26/1971 was their last at that venue.

Bill's Shop: Projects, Mods & Repairs / Thunderbuckers for '76 'bird
« on: April 04, 2015, 01:02:23 PM »
Hi and sorry if this topic is already discussed in lenght. Feel free to direct me to it and I'll delete this.

Anyway, I'm planning to get a pair of Thunderbucker '66s and install them into my '76 T-Bird. I believe it can be done without modifications and the bass can be "reversed" into original if necessary?

I like the sound of my '76 and I know it is a unique sounding bass among T-Birds but I like the sound of my custom made non-reverse even more and it has also custom made pickups that are more in line with '60s style humbuckers than the sidewinders found in '76.

Has anyone installed Thunderbuckers or others in their '76 (or '77 or '79) 'birds? Did it make it sound more like a 60's T-Bird?

I've been thinking of trying a new pickup for my RS-900. Are there any drop-in replacements available? A passive model, preferably a humbucker. The stock pickup sounds good (the preamp is bypassed) but I'd like to try something a bit darker and powerful. Closer to Aria SB perhaps (which has approx. the same pickup location and a humbucker).

I found one that should fit:

Any others?

The Outpost Cafe / New gig photos (again)

The lights were awful and the background Marshalls are tacky IMO but still our friend managed to take these great photos:

Bass Amps & Effects / LAB Series L2
« on: September 08, 2013, 12:27:16 AM »
I'm getting the L2 amp soon and was wondering if anyone here could share their experience about it, I'm sure someone has played one. I've heard plenty of good things about it and it sure looks like a solid state amp I'm looking for: reliable, reasonably loud (for 100 watts), warm and not modern sounding.

There's one thing that bothers a bit. It says "minimum load 8 ohms" and I have only 4 ohm cabs (SVT 810E and EBS CL212) so I have to get me a 4x10" 8 ohm cab (which I had planned to do for some time)...or does it work with a 4ohm cab without blowing the fuse or doing worse damage? At talkbass someone said that the original manual stated it could drive 4 ohms too but since there's only one cab output jack...?

Gibson Basses / Does this sound like a G-3?
« on: August 25, 2013, 05:47:44 AM »
This is another Ray Shulman (Gentle Giant) mystery. Some of the tracks on their 1977 album "Missing Piece" sound different than his usual P-Bass and here's one sample soloed:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4322198/Winning%20-%20Bass.mp3

Doesn't sound like a Jazz Bass either. Could it be a G-3? There's something there that tells me it's a 3 PU bass.

EDIT:
The Ripper bass with both pickups on in parallel sound a bit like it too.
http://www.flyguitars.com/gibson/bass/1978gibsonRipper.php

BTW, the first sample has clearly pickup's out of phase and the last one in phase, not vice versa as it reads there.

Other Bass Brands / Ray Shulman's mystery bass
« on: August 23, 2013, 02:47:50 AM »
The Giant of progressive bass playing, Mr. Ray Shulman of Gentle Giant mostly used a P-bass for the best part of bands career. The last album "Civilian" sounds different 'though, more modern active bass sound. Alembic perhaps or maybe this?:

The pic is from 1980. Could it be a Carvin?

The Bass Zone / John Paul Jones mystery bass
« on: August 11, 2013, 03:26:05 AM »

Could be a fretless? He used to favour an electric upright or his fretless Precision during their acoustic sets when not playing an acoustic guitar or mandolin. The pic is from Australia 1972.
