The Bass Zone / Some Mike Rutherford goodness
« on: March 22, 2019, 05:06:30 AM »
I've always liked mr. Rutherford's bass playing even though he rates it himself as "average". Some very inventive lines and a great pick sound.

I had never noticed the 8-string bass on this EP track (from "Spot The Pigeon") before. He used the Hagström briefly circa 1977 and 1978, the other tracks AFAIK are "One For The Vine", "Burning Rope" and the live version of "I Know What I Like".

The fast section is most likely played on a 4-string Shergold.

Gibson Basses / Cliff Williams' non-reverse
« on: March 05, 2019, 04:33:17 AM »
I started another Cliff thread and posted this pic there and realized it's a different bass than the one he used on "Back In Black" promovideos. Four knobs, a toggle switch and block markers. Reminds me of a bass Leon Wilkeson used one time.

Is it even a Gibson? The pickguard looks a bit different?

Other Bass Brands / Cliff Williams' Frankenstein bass
« on: March 05, 2019, 12:59:25 AM »

P-bass body with a Sting Ray neck and active electronics. Not so crazy when you think he used a Steinberger for a while.

He also had two black custom basses with similar pickup configurations. One with penises as fretboard markers and one with a female on all fours on a fretboard. Even Cliff Williams succumbed to tacky eighties antics it seems. :)

The Outpost Cafe / R.I.P. Mark Hollis
« on: February 26, 2019, 04:47:08 AM »
Sad news. Loved his music with Talk Talk and on his lone solo album.

The progress from early synth pop to the organic sound of "The Colour Of Spring", very experimental "Spirit Of Eden" and "Laughing Stock" and his timeless acoustic solo album is quite astonishing.

Other Bass Brands / Fenderbird PU locations
« on: January 21, 2019, 04:27:33 AM »
Sorry if this has been discusses before in detail.

I assume the neck pickup on Entwistle's Fenderbird is in the same location as it would be on a 60's Gibson T-Bird, right? Is the bridge pickup in the same place too or is it a little bit further to the north? It seems to me but my eyes may lie.

The Bass Zone / Squire & Bruford
« on: February 20, 2018, 03:07:45 AM »
Lots of new (at last to me) isolated bass tracks from the original Yes rhythm section.
"South Side Of The Sky" has Squire playing his Telecaster bass and what a sound! Might be one of my favs from him.

The Outpost Cafe / The Raisins
« on: April 22, 2017, 12:01:55 PM »
Bumped into this today and was instantly hooked. A fantastic song, reminds me of Max Webster somehow.

Great players and as I did some research I found that they did evolve into The Bears and Psychodots. One album released in 1983, produced by Adrian Belew who was also a member of The Bears. Gotta get the album but this whole show would be nice too. Their version of "Avening Annie" (Andy Pratt's song) is brilliantly played and on the whole the band reminds me of NRBQ. Not as rootsy but they seem to share the same qualities: the humour, the musicianship, the eclectism.

Gibson Basses / Alan Barry's doubleneck
« on: April 07, 2017, 10:53:03 AM »
Alan Barry was a bassist/guitarist/vocalist for a short-lived progrock trio Fields featuring also Graham Field (ex- Rare Bird) on keys and the mighty Andy McCulloch (ex- Crimson and future Greenslade) on drums. He used a modded doubleneck:

Rickenbacker Basses / Jerome Rimson's Rickenbacker...or is it?
« on: April 06, 2017, 12:57:25 PM »
Jerome Rimson played with Phil Lynott in the early eighties and mainly used this modified Ric:

Or is it Ric at all? Lemmy had a similar bass too or more likely used the very same instrument.

Looks like it has a third pickup at the bridge end.

The Bass Zone / Bass & wah-wah
« on: March 29, 2017, 07:02:10 AM »
I recently bought a wah-wah -pedal and started the use it with the bass. A basic Dunlop Cry-Baby (w/a "vocal mod" or whatever it is was called...), shouldn't work but it does. Eats a bit of the low end but I don't care.  With a fuzz it's instant Canterbury prog or John Wetton '73 "Talking Drum" climax.

I also started to think about favourite wah-wah -bass moments. Lots of prog of course, like Gentle Giant's "Mobile", Richard Sinclair with Hatfield and The North, Pekka Pohjola w/Wigwam but also "Night Woman" by Nazareth.  What are yours?

Here's a small intro I played to our jazz-rock combo's version of "Icarus" (Ralph Towner). Meandering and searching for the spark but the sound is good. '76 Thunderbird (w/ EY pickups) through a Lab Series L4 and EBS CL210 (mic'ed).

Other Bass Brands / Tom Peterson's mystery 4-string
« on: March 11, 2017, 01:24:40 PM »
This 4-string simple looking bass has bugged me for years. It seems he used it circa 1979:

It also looks a bit wrong being a sort of modern looking bass with a pointy headstock and neck-through construction, at least when compared to other more vintage and "cool" looking 4-string basses he used on stage at the time (T-Birds, '55 P-Bass, Fender Bass V).

Fender Basses / Richard Sinclair's modified Jazz Bass
« on: January 25, 2017, 12:52:31 PM »
I've always liked Richard Sinclair's singing and bass playing and his signature tone has always been a Jazz Bass with emphasis on the bridge pickup. However on Hatfild And The North's second album "The Rotters' Club" his tone is different (but equally tasty) and it bothered me for years (I'm serious!). The bass sounds a bit like a P-bass or a Ric with bridge pickup on.

Well, it seems he had removed the Jazz pickups and had installed a Gibson EB bridge pickup between the original locations. I asked Neil Murray on Facebook if he could give me any info since Neil and Richard played some gigs together when Neil was in Gilgamesh in 1973 and he said that Richard liked the sound of his P-bass that had an EB-3 bridge PU installed (near the bridge).

He later reinstalled the Jazz pickups and went back to his old sound (during his stint with Camel also removed the frets).

The Bass Zone / Jim O'Rourke: Simple Songs
« on: May 13, 2016, 05:07:54 AM »
Did anyone else pick up this fantastic album released last year? Great songs, witty lyrics and a warm production. There's a slight Genesis/Collins -vibe on the drum department and I bet it's not a coincidence since Jim is a huge "Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" fan.

Apparently Jim and his Japanese band did some gigs too:

The Bass Zone / Andy Pratt and a killer bassline

Abraham Laboriel on bass , most likely. A great song and a great album too. Very eclectic, don't be fooled by the cover.  :)
