Gibson Basses / Gibson policy
« on: February 05, 2010, 12:45:09 AM »
A nice one again. Nice for our love/hate relationship with Gibson;) I believe I haven't told this one. If i did: Oops.

Two weeks ago I tried to call Gibson for a Epi T-Bird Pro. I wanted one for a review bass. All marketing people are fired, so I just called Gibson Europe in The Netherlands.

I asked the guy on the phone for a review bass. He didn't want to send me one, because that was 'too expensive'. I explained him that 20 dollars shipping costs in exchange for a review of two pages isn't expensive at all.
I offered to collect the bass myself, cos it's only an hour drive. That wasn't possible either. If I could call back after six months....

My answer was that I hope that Gibso still excists in six months.

My colleague of a sister magazine wanted to review an SG Zoot Suit. Same answer...

Hi guys,

As you maybe have noticed I wasn't around for a while because of different reasons. Most important case was a lot of pain in my right hand. I was thinking Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or RSI. It's the last. Luckily I hadn't much problems playing bass, but I work as journalist for some magazines, so I need to write a lot. Because of that I stopped some forums, instant messenger and so for a while.

But I missed you and I'm back to give certain (German) people some resistance!

Gibson Basses / Gibson review policy
« on: December 08, 2009, 03:15:11 AM »
Today I called Gibson Europe to send me a Epiphone T-bird Pro for a two page review in our magazine, plus a background page. So three pages of free publicity.

They guy on the phone told me the don't have marketing people anymore because of the credit crunch and they can't send me a bass cos that's to expensive (like 20 dollars for three pages of free publicity in the only Dutch bass magazine). I offered to pick up a bass. That wasn't possible either.

My colleague asked the same last week for a Gibson SG Zoot Suit. Same story.

The guy asked me to call back within some months. I answered I would do that if Gibson still excisted then...

The Outpost Cafe / Sorry
« on: October 05, 2009, 12:48:51 PM »
Sorry, I'm just proud. Have to post this:D

The La La Lies:

Last weekend we played at a venue in Amsterdam and an A&R manager of Roadrunner Records (Kiss, Parlor Mob, ...) was checking out a band. We played next and he was still around. He liked us better than the band he came for and now he's trying to get us to support USA band Parlor Mob and he wants to talk about a record deal:)

A day before I was contacted by my favourite Dutch venue (Vera) which wants us to play there.

Today we got a phonecall from a Dutch TV show called De Wereld Draait Door. Primetime and I believe the only Dutch tv show at the moment with live music, but eacht artist (one per evening) only plays 60 seconds. It's watched by milllions of Dutch people and people still talk to me about the time I was on (see the 'impact of TV' thread). They maybe want us to play, but we had to answer some questions first. I'll keep ya posted, but I'm excited!!

Other Bass Brands / Sterling by Music Man
« on: October 01, 2009, 10:25:30 AM »
Today I received a new bass for a review. It's an Indonesian made Sterling by Music Man which is prized between a MIM and a USA Fender in Holland. And I like it! More will follow.

Gibson Basses / Adam Clayton and Gibson
« on: September 28, 2009, 10:53:05 PM »
Adam Clayton of U2 seems to have some nice Gibsons and Epiphones. According to website http://www.u2-stage-and-studio.com/adam/id8.html he has the following ones:

EPIPHONE // Rivoli // 19xx // natural finish
EPIPHONE // Rivoli // 19xx // tobacco sunburst
GIBSON // Les Paul Signature bass // 1973-1979 (exact vintage to be determined) // gold finish (Use: Mysterious Way during U2:360 tour.)
GIBSON // Thunderbird bass // 19xx // mahogany finish
GIBSON // Thunderbird (reverse) bass // 19xx // mahogany finish
GIBSON // Triumph [aka: Les Paul Recording bass]  // vintage from between 1975-1979 // white finish
[I have an short-scale Gibson Les Paul Recording Bass from the ’70s. I don’t know what it is about this one—it’s a very inspiring instrument. The strings very rarely get changed, and I haven’t changed the way it’s set up since I bought it. But I always have it sitting around the studio. When I put it on, I always go somewhere with it, playing little melodies. That’s what I used to play the countermelody on “Sometimes You Can’t Make It on Your Own.”  Adam has been using this bass for "One" during shows on the U2:360 tour]
GIBSON // RD Artist Bass // 1977-1981 (vintage uncertain) / natural finish

Of course he also has and uses Fenders, Laklands, Warwicks and more. At this site you can find some pics too.

Today I found this one Facebook:

Puck, a local girl-bass player wants a Ricky badly. I borrowed her my 3000 for a while. Always bad to see your bass looks better on someone else...;)

That bas is very small on me but on her it's gigantic!

The last couple of days a lot of topics about 8-string basses appeared here. Some Rickies, the Nonrev-copy and more. Today I found this one:

Never listened to that song a lot, but it's quite good!
