The Bass Zone / IM Peter Boer
« on: December 08, 2022, 06:22:38 AM »
Some of you might know him and you certainly have seen some pics. Fellow Dutchman Peter Boer has passed away. He once made a Fender Tractor Bass, and later he started Peterbuilt Basses, making Fenders like the Lotto Bass. Recently he started The Rickenbacker Farm and the pics of all of his green, green/blue and blue Ricks are all over social media.

He was only 49. I'm shocked.

Gibson Basses / SB 400 in the Netherlands
« on: October 11, 2022, 08:32:08 AM »
I really want one, but this year I already spent some savings on basses. Just if you can't afford it, one pops up haha! Maybe other people who are interested?

Other Bass Brands / Ampeg Dan Armstrong copy
« on: July 21, 2022, 08:47:49 AM »
I stop buying basses now for a while.

As a '70s Faces and Stones fan I always fancied a see through Dan Armstrong bass. Real ones are around 3000 euros/dollars (Euro and Dollar are 1:1 at the moment) plus shipping, VAT, etc. A friend bought a copy at the NAMM, installed a Nordstrand and he loves it, so I went looking for one,

I bought this one on Aliexpress recently. The bass + shipping + taxes + i port duties were € 260  ($ 260) in total. A steal. It's very well made, I have to work on the action. It doesn't sound that good, the neck isn't that nice, but hey: who cares?  Maybe I'll look out for a decent MM pickup, but I see it more as a bass for pics, videos, etc. I don't want to spend too much moneys on it.

Fender Basses / Squier Bronco
« on: June 10, 2022, 02:55:42 AM »
My local shop had this lim ed Squier Bronco and I was afraid it would be bought by a school to be abused by kids. So I saved it, bought a paisley guard and I tried to make a Vincent van Trigt Paisley Mustang on a budget. This whole bass is cheaper than the Novak Darkstar in the Van Trigt 'Stang.

Gibson Basses / Explorerbird, but No Entwistle
« on: May 31, 2022, 08:31:30 AM »
Of course it's strange 'we' call Entwistles Explorers with Fender necks Explorerbird. The Fenderbird was logical but... And our Cataldo uses it too. But now the name is official.

Also great bass content, so I think I can post it here. Wait for the EB2.

Strange. The humbuckers are single coils... Why would Gretsch/Fender do this?

Gibson Basses / Curtis Novak EB4L pickup
« on: April 07, 2022, 11:22:26 AM »
Curtis Novak made a new Gibson replacement pickup:

"Finally got my final production parts for my version of the Gibson EB-4L pickup. If you are not hip to this pickyo you should Google it. Was produced during the 70's. It has a nice clean full tone. I wired it same "Revolutionary design" where you can play the whole pickup as a single humbucker, or the top 2 strings can be separated from the bottom 2 strings. Mine is designed to fit in a standard modern Gibson EB-0 pickup route."

At the moment only visible as post on his instagram profile:

Other Bass Brands / '63 Burns Sonic Bass (NBD)
« on: March 23, 2022, 05:45:03 AM »
Some weeks ago a friend who works at a music store, told me they got a '63 Burns Sonic in. The pickups are on - and not in - the pickguard en the former owner removed the switch and put the pickups close together like a mudbucker. Another friend at the shop brought it back to former glory - as good as possible - and I got it for a very nice price.

It's a small, light, and very well sounding bass!

Other Bass Brands / NBD Guild Starfire flamed maple
« on: February 22, 2022, 05:29:03 AM »
After drooling over one for ages, and for a while being interested in the cheap Split-P version, I decided to buy a new Guild Starfire. I had the DeArmond reissue once, but I sold it a long time ago.

I wanted the two pickup version, so I looked at the mahogany in Cherry or the Flamed Maple natural. It's the neck which makes the most change, cos both have a big maple middle block and a rosewood fingerboard and with laminated tops it hardly doesn't matter what kinda bodywood it is. So I think the basses won't sound that different.

The mahogany wasn't in stock, so I went for the maple. First it is a beautiful bass with flamed maple all around (but not too PRS fancy), and a thin walnut strip at the back of the neck. The controls are beautiful and there are some little metal dots on the body as reference for the controls. The bridge is strange with two screws, faom underneath it but it works. It comes with a case and I ordered an extra gig bag.

It's short scale and the neck is narrow, c/u shape and deep as I like it. The bridge is quite far into the body, the strap button is at the 17th fret so all is a bit 'to the left' like on a Tbird or SG Bass. And I'm used to it. I'm quite tall so I like big basses.

Don't expect it to be light, cos of course the body is quite deep in the middle and that's were the big center block is. It's Fender weight.

The sound is everything I wished for. I think it's the nicest sounding bass I have ever tried, along with my '76 Tbird. It came with round wounds and I will keep it that way.

The neck BiSonic sounds deep, warm, wide, and full. Very mouth watering sweet. Never dull or muddy. I think it's because of the wooden saddles, the edge is taken off a bit, so it's mellow, but not flatwound mellow. More like a mellowed down roundwound, without getting dull. The Bridge BiSonic can do a good enough J-neck or P imitation, playing with the tone a bit. So it's very versatile. I always liked the look of the BiSonics.
Together you get the slighly compresses sound and you can play with the volumes and mastervolume to het some nuances. Tone down gives it a more flatwound-with-sustain sound.

A bass which came close were the Chinese/Korean (Starfire is Korean) 32" Warwick Star Bass. Those big singlecoils are also very, very, very well sounding. Because of the heavy bridge and very stiff neck, the Warwick is a bit more aggressive sounding.

Bass Amps & Effects / New Laney pedals
« on: February 22, 2022, 05:15:29 AM »
Laney has some new pedals out and one is worth a check. It's an octaver (octave down) but you have an extra control knob and three way switch and you can dial in an octave up, two octaves down or a fifth up. Nice for Royal Blood fans. It is called the Bass Interval.

Bass Amps & Effects / Behringer Mu-tron octave divider
« on: February 22, 2022, 05:14:06 AM »
I just bought a € 89,- Berhinger copy of a Mu-Tron and it's the most fun for 89 euros I had in a while. A lot of fun to play with the octaver and the extra fuzzy ringing and high tones. It's just out and I like it a lot!

Fender Basses / Fender/Squier 2022
« on: January 26, 2022, 03:18:19 AM »
Fender brought out a lot of news today. I know there will be a Fender Meteora bass, with two double J's for around 1200 euros. Haven't got that news in yet, but I saw the pics. Fender also launches a reissue JV series (I kid you not) with Fender logo. No basses yet.

Most for now is Squier and some new colours for the Jackenbacker (Jackson with Rickloos) and for the small Gretsch jr. bass. The pink one is nice!

There are a lot of 40 year ann Squier models. P's and J's with block inlays (P too) and gold hardware and gold anodized guards. Active 4 and 5 string Squier P's and J's with HH or PH and black hardware.

I will soon have an article online with pics.
